Heron on the Bayou

My initial thought was to name this photo of a great blue heron (Ardea herodias) "Walk Like an Egyptian." You know, after that fun 80s song by The Bangles. But then I realized that the heron was not walking. Hmmm … it probably doesn't matter … "Way oh-way-oh, way oh-way-oh."

I've had several inquiries about how to get a print of some my photographs. This is a hobby for me, so I haven't been equipped to handle those requests. But I enjoy what I'm doing and want to share my photographs.

Hidden on the bayou.

"This is a snowy egret hidden among the reeds on the bayou at the Sabine National Wildlife Refuge in Louisiana.

The Snowy egret (Egretta thula ) is a small white heron. It is the American counterpart to the very similar Old World Little egret, which has become established in the Bahamas. At one time, the plumes of the snowy egret were in great demand as decorations for women's hats. They were hunted for these plumes and this reduced the population of the species to dangerously low levels. Now protected in the United States by law, under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, this bird's population has rebounded." - animalia.bio

Yesterday Charlie caught one of the young squirrels in the backyard. These days there are usually more of those little squirrels in the backyard than I notice. It's just a game to Charlie, chase the squirrel, he has no idea what to do if he catches a squirrel. Usually, he freezes just when he is in a good position to grab a squirrel. This time, he nabbed the little squirrel, picked it up, then dropped it, and the squirrel scurried through the hole under the fence. He's done that with a rabbit as well. Do you think he understands empathy?
