In 1969, after Richard Nixon's election to the Presidency, Martha Mitchell, the wife of John Mitchell, the newly-appointed Attorney General, told reporters, "This country is going to go so far to the right you won’t recognize it.”

By 1976, Nixon had resigned in disgrace, Mitchell served 19 months in federal prison for conspiracy, obstruction of justice, and perjury.

The Department of Justice indicted 69 people in the Watergate scandal, and won 48 convictions. In the 1970s, the Department of Justice actually used to indict, try, and convict people who committed crimes against the United States.

Three takeaways:

Nixon's victory in 1968 and, even more so, his re-election in 1972, was not dissimilar to this week's election. Everyone knew he was a complete piece of shit, but somehow he appealed to groups of voters he wouldn't lift a finger to help at any point in his career

Also worth noting, in the 21st century the DOJ and the courts don't indict, try, or convict people who abuse their power to commit crimes against the country. They just let those types of criminal cases dither along for years without ever going to trial at all.

Things don't always turn out the way the 'winners' think it will.
