On March 1, Romanians celebrate spring by giving friends and family small charms attached to a red-and-white string. They are called “mărțișor” and can depict anything cheerful; symbols of love, spring, and good fortune are popular choices.
Did you know that March 1st means the beginning of spring, for Romanians, it is closely linked to the tradition of offering mărțișor, an ancient symbol celebrating the change of seasons and the rebirth of nature. Last year, a bill was even submitted to the Senate calling for 1 March, the day of the "Mărțișor", to become a national Romanian holiday. The aim was to promote the traditions associated with Marțișor. Only that Romania has already had this obligation since 2017 when the Mărțișor entered the select list of UNESCO intangible heritage. #martı #luxury #abundant #UNESCO #martisor #martisoare #gratitude #familienzeit #martisor #mărțișor (hier: Amsterdam Netherland) https://www.instagram.com/p/CovZ8bwscNY/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
I couldn't stop thinking about Marinette giving mărțişoare to her friends, so I wrote a very self indulgent fic where that's exactly what she does.
If you want to learn more about this Romanian tradition and get an idea about what the ones she gives in the fic look like, I put a bunch of pictures and explanations under the cut.
Basically, a mărțişor (plural: mărțişoare) can be anything as long as it has a red and white string attached to it, usually as a bow. Some of the most popular kinds of mărțişoare are symbols that are considered lucky, such as the four leaf clover or the horseshoe, but a snowdrop is pretty common too.
We give them to family, friends, whoever, on March 1, usually accompanied by some kind of wishing along the lines of “have a nice spring” or something like that, and you’re supposed to wear one for the whole month (not the same, of course; you can wear a different one every day), pinned to a shirt, on the left side. It’s also pretty popular for girls to wear one or more bracelets instead of a pin.
As far as bracelets are concerned, they can be pretty varied too, but the most common are these:
Love, love, love! It's March again. On this day Romanian men offer martisoare (small trinkets with a white-read thread) to women. They wear the martisor the whole month to give them strength. It’s so pure. I love this tradition! Who's going to give me one? I need some love today.
