It had been months since the three of you finally had a proper break. Between missions, paperwork and just general life, there had been no time for any of you to take any sort of time for yourselves.
So as soon as the chance came up, you’d all decided that you’d head out of the city and up into the sticks somewhere, away from the hustle and bustle of daily life where you could truly relax in each others company.
A remote log cabin in the woods made the perfect place, surrounded by thick pines and a gorgeous lake excellent for swimming. The dates had been set and you’d be lying if you said that you hadn’t been counting down the days till you left.
But when the morning of the trip finally rolled around instead of waking up full of energy and raring to go, you woke up groggy, head feeling heavy as you tried to breathe through a blocked nose and painfully dry throat.
Great.
You’d been praying the gentle fatigue that had settled in your muscles last night was from training too hard and easily blamed the way you’d be sniffling for most the night on the spicy noodles that Wanda had made for dinner. But it became painfully clear that this was the beginning of a cold setting in.
Any plans of sleeping it off on the journey over were pointless too. You had already volunteered to drive the majority of the way there - partly because you loved the open road and partly because Nat often tended to get road rage as she made her way out of the crowded city, arguing with traffic and idiot drivers alike.
Still you told yourself you’d be fine. You were the last one up, forcing yourself out of bed to splash some cold water on your face hoping it would help. It didn’t. By the time you’d gotten ready and dressed, you could already feel the congestion settling in your sinuses. Heading down to the kitchen, you forced a smile when Nat greeted you with a warm, “Good morning, sleepyhead.” as she tossed the car-keys in your direction.
“You ready to hit the road?” She asked casually, drinking the last of the coffee in her cup as Wanda bounced into view, smiling happily.
“Everything’s packed! We’re good to go!” She announced proudly, having taken on the role of packing everything in the car, double and triple checking she hadn’t forgotten anything.
You tried to return their energy, mustering up a half-excited, “Sounds great, I can’t wait too-“ your words were cut off by a sharp inhale as a sudden itch in your nose announced itself, “Hhi’tshhu!” You bent at the waist a little, sneezing down into your hoodie.
Wanda offered a pack of tissues from her bag but you shook your head as Natasha looked over her shoulder to glance back at you, “You good?”
“Haven’t taken any antihistamines yet.” It was the first thing you could think of and it wasn’t exactly untrue. So neither of them seemed to dwell on it.
“I’ve already packed them I think, do you need me to go find some?” Wanda offered sweetly but you declined, placing your hand on her back and guiding her towards the garage.
“No, don’t worry about it. It’s fine, let’s just get going before traffic builds up, you know what ‘Tasha’s like.”
You forced a grin as you headed to the garage, climbing into the drivers side and settling into the position you’d likely be stuck in for the next several hours, internally groaning at how stiff your joints already felt. This wasn’t going to be fun. But there was little time to dwell on it as your girlfriends came bouncing into the car. Nat rode shotgun, placing her phone on the dash and setting up the GPS display while Wanda got into the middle seat of the back, eagerly grabbed the aux cord and began searching through her Spotify playlists.
As you guided the car out of the city and onto the open highway, it became increasingly harder to hide how miserable you were feeling. The warmth of the heater, which you’d insisted on blasting despite the mild summer weather, only made you sleepier. The congestion behind your eyes turned your skull into a dull, throbbing drum.
The miles seemed to crawl by. Conversation drifted as Wanda peppered Nat with questions about what hiking trails they should do first, whether they’d have enough firewood to make smores later on, or if there’d be any cute wild animals to take photos of. You tried to chime in here and there, but each word felt like it scraped at your raw throat. Eventually you gave up trying to keep up with their conversation.
And if you weren’t already miserable enough it wasn’t long before the sneezing started again. First just one or two, easily dismissible. But as the journey continued it was hard to ignore them when they became fits - harsh and breathy expulsions which you buried into the crook of your arm or the collar of your hoodie.
“Hhh’NGKTshh!…hhH’tSHHuu!….HHuh-tTSHh!”
“Bless you honey!” Wanda would pipe up every time, murmuring polite words of worry as she continued to sniffle, “Are you sure you don’t want me to get you those meds? Your voice is getting all clogged.”
“I’m fine, thank you.”
Another 30 minutes passed by and you were almost completely zoned out, staring unfocused at the car in front. When suddenly you hit a bump in the road, which shook you from your trance. Your head span so hard you couldn’t stop the car from swerving a little. Immediately you corrected yourself, harshly steering back into the correct lane with a muttered, “Fuck.”
Natasha jolted out of her slumber in the passenger seat at the sudden movement as you muttered a hoarse curse. She frowned. One look at you - the glassy eyes, crimson flushed cheeks - she knew.
“Pull over.”
“I’m fine,” You croaked, trying to swallow down a cough. “It’s just-“
“Pull over.” The edge in her voice makes you obey.
You pressed your lips together, knuckles white on the steering wheel, but when you snuck a glance at her face, you knew there was no point arguing. You barely got the car stopped in the hard shoulder before Natasha’s unbuckling her seatbelt and Wanda’s leaning forward, pressing a hand to your burning forehead, “Detka!” She couldn’t help the surprise from seeping into her tone as she felt the feverish heat lingering on your skin.
Your side door opened and Natasha stood with her hands on her hips, waiting expectantly for you to either say something or get out.
“She’s feeling pretty warm.” Wanda piped up from the backseat as soon as she got the chance, “You think she’s feverish?”
“Seems like it.” The widow bit back the urge to sigh, replacing it with a softer, “Let me take over.” She decided, leaning down to unbuckle your seatbelt and offering a hand as she helped you out, “You’ve done enough for today. Go sit in the back with Wands’ sweetie.” She watched as you wobbled as you stood, clearly out of it and she kicked herself for not noticing sooner.
There really wasn’t much room to argue with her, your shoulders dropping in defeat as you shuffled to the back, sliding up next to Wanda and letting your body rest against hers.
“What were you doing pretending you were fine?” Wanda murmured softly once you’d gotten settled, Nat got the car back onto the road but she kept stealing glances in the mirror to check on you.
You coughed, finally able to without needing to hide it anymore, “We’ve had this planned for weeks! You two would’ve stayed home if you’d known.”
“I also wouldn’t had let you drive if I knew you might’ve fallen asleep at the wheel.” The redhead added from the front.
You rolled your eyes, “I wouldn’t have fallen asleep, it’s just a cold.”
“You seem pretty out of it for ‘just a cold’.” Nat shook her head dismissively while Wanda began softly running her fingers through your hair, murmuring something about how you were sweating through it.
“Should we turn around? We could reschedule.” Wanda suggested quietly, her eyebrows pressing together in a worried expression as you nestled beside her, “I don’t want you exhausting yourself just for our sake.”
“No-“ You interjected a little too fast, muffling a cough into your elbow before continuing, “We’re nearly there. You two- we all deserve a break. Plus all this driving would’ve been for nothing if we turn back now.”
As much as she hated to admit it, you did make a good point. Natasha hummed quietly, her lips pressed together as she considered your words. Reaching up, she adjusted the rear-view mirror so she could keep you in her line of sight as she drove, “Okay.” She said finally after a moment of silence, “But we’re resting, alright? No running off into the woods like you’re little red-nosed riding hood.”
“I can make you some tea as well, something for your throat.” Wanda added kindly, already knowing exactly what herbs she could add to make a soothing drink.
You let out a soft hum, something between gratitude and exhaustion but not quite forming any words before tucking your knees up on the seat, burrowing closer into the brunette’s side. Natasha glanced back again, her eyes lingering on you longer this time - an unmistakable softness taking over her expression.
“She’ll be alright.” She murmured, looking to Wanda this time, “We’ll just make the most of it.”
By the time the cabin came into view, nestled comfortably within the thick green forest and bathed in the late afternoon glow, you were fast asleep, curled up with your head in Wanda’s lap.
The witch smiled softly before she slowly roused you awake as Natasha pulled into the driveway, whispering softly “We’re here sweetheart. Wake up my love.”
A sleepy, groggy noise left your lips as you slowly stirred awake, sleepily rubbing your eyes as the passenger side door opened. Wanda stepped out, extending a hand as she helped you out a few seconds later. Standing felt weird. Your balance felt dizzy and loose, noticeable enough for Natasha to place a steadying arm around your waist to keep you in place.
“Don’t pass out on me.” She half-joked as she guided you over to the cabin. Unpacking could wait till later, all the redhead was bothered about now was getting you inside and settled beneath a cosy blanket.
Wanda had already unlocked the door, sweeping it open with a flick of her hand and a soft pulse of red energy. The cabin smelled faintly of pine and something earthy and warm.
“Sofa or bed?” Nat asked whilst Wanda headed to the kitchen, presumably to make that tea she’d promised you earlier.
You thought for a second, not particularly fond of having to sit in a small room by yourself. “Sofa.”
The sofa was a slightly cracked brown leather, clearly worn but comfortable nonetheless. A generous supply of pillows and a thick throw blanket lay hung over the back. You could hear the sound of the kettle whistling as you sank into the soft material, finally letting yourself relax. Nat was quick to sit down beside you, leaning down to begin unlacing your boots, “Don’t get used to this princess treatment.” She teased but her words held no malice, if anything she was glad for the opportunity to spoil you a little.
Wanda returned then, carefully cradling a steaming mug of tea that smelled faintly of honey, lemon, and something herbal. She handed it to you as she settled in the open spot beside you, one hand resting gently on your lower thigh in a quiet, grounding touch.
“This’ll help,” She promised. “Drink what you can, then rest. The cupboards were already stocked up so there’s plenty more to come when you need some.”
Outside, the forest stood quiet, wrapped in gold, and for the first time in what felt like forever, things were still. The tea created a pleasant warmth in your stomach, the sweet honey easing your sore throat. Your eyes began to feel heavy again as your breathing slowly softened.
You wouldn’t remember much of that evening. But you’d remember the warmth. The way Natasha tucked the blanket tighter around you without saying a word. The faint kiss Wanda pressed to your forehead. The soft murmur of their voices as you drifted between dreams.
You’d remember that even sick, you were loved.
