May 17th, 2026: Pontocho's sakkō outfits are always very bright and, this time, it's a woman from Masamiya (雅美家) who is shining brightly as she makes the journey from maiko to geiko. Hidesaki (秀咲季) is now in her final hairstyle and outfit as a maiko, and the look is stunning! Each okiya in Pontocho has a special iromontsuki for sakkō, and Masamiya's is purple with the Onoe school's chrysanthemum kamon and leaves. It's paired beautifully with a golden shōchikubai obi and topped off with a silver wire crane over pine kanzashi; simple yet elegant. Pontocho tends to have a longer sakkō period than the other kagai, especially during odori season, and Hidesaki has been no exception. March 3rd, 2026: Congratulations are in order for Kyoto's newest maiko! Hidetowa (秀十和) of Masamiya (雅美家) in Pontocho is celebrating her misedashi! She is the first debut for her district this year and is now the sixth active maiko at the prosperous Masamiya okiya! While she is debuting without an official onesan, she has many okiya onesan to look up to! June 11th, 2025: Double the delight as two new maiko debut today! Maho (真帆) of Minoyae (美の八重) in Gion Kobu and Hidenagi (秀凪) of Masamiya (雅美家) in Pontocho are celebrating their misedashi! Both Maho and Hidenagi performed in the Miyako Odori and the Kamogawa Odori respectively this year under their real names as they had not been given a geimei yet, so they already had professional experience under their obi before their first official days! Maho's outfit features colorful flowers and birds among waves with a golden shōchikubai obi while Hidenagi's outfit features lucky treasures and waves with a golden musical instrument motif obi ^^ おめでとうさんどす真帆ちゃんと秀凪ちゃん ^o^! February 1st, 2024: A new geiko is born! Hidechiyo (秀千代) of Masamiya (雅美家) in Pontocho is celebrating her erikae! She is the second erikae for the new Masamiya okiya and the third geiko to reside there. She is also the first erikae for her kagai this year! Her outfit features waves with a Kai Awase (shell matching game) motif and a golden obi with karabana in a tortoiseshell pattern ^^ おめでとうさんどす秀千代さん ^o^! Image is courtesy of Ono No Komachi.

April 8th, 2024: Congratulations to Kyoto's newest maiko on the occasion of her misedashi! Hideshiho (秀しほ) of Masamiya (雅美家) in Pontocho has debuted among the cherry blossoms as Kyoto reaches its peak tourist season! As she is from the newly opened Masamiya okiya she is debuting without an onesan, but with 3 geiko and 6 other maiko to look up to she has plenty of role models around her to help her grow. She will actually be participating in the Kamogawa Odori next month, which runs from May 1st to 24th, so please look out for her! Her outfit features toys and lucky treasures while her obi showcases a lovely pine in shippo pattern ^^

What's That Thing? Part 29

On The Fourth Day of Fun I present... an ask! Like many of the good asks I tend to hold onto them for times like this as they make for wonderful features ^^ Anonymous asked: "What were your favorite misedashi/sakkō/erikae ensembles this year?" This is such a hard one to answer too as there were so many good ones! My favorite misedashi ensemble goes to Hinaho (雛帆) of Sakaemasa (栄政) in Gion Higashi. Since they don't have misedashi often we don't get to see their outfits much, so I liked seeing their very elegant lucky treasures/karabana and trellis combo!

Image courtesy of the Gion Higashi Kabukai. My favorite sakkō outfit goes to Koaki (小晶) of Kaden (花傳) in Miyagawa Cho. This one was a no doubter and is just unmatched in how elegant and bold it is. Kaden's unique tradition of having their maiko wear iromontsuki for a few days is nice in and of itself, but it's the iromontsuki that steals the show! It's a beautiful wine red color with a family of cranes holding pine needles. It truly sets the tone for the upcoming erikae and is an unforgettable kimono!

Image courtesy of Kaden. Lastly, my favorite erikae of the year goes to Hidemai (秀眞衣) of Masamiya (雅美家) in Pontocho. It's so great to see girls from new okiya succeeding, and for Hidemai being Masamiya's first erikae in a brand new outfit with pine and waves is an auspicious start indeed!

She is the first maiko from the newly opened Masamiya okiya to have her erikae and is sharing the occasion with the Hina Matsuri festival!
