Indie Game Spotlight: Star Renegades
Hold on to your pixels for this week’s Indie Game Spotlight! Star Renegades is a tactical squad-based rogue-lite RPG set in an endless interplanetary rebellion against an evil authoritarian empire. Fusing a tactical, turn-based (no RNG) battle system that puts emphasis on interrupts and counters, with a procedurally generated and emergent mission-based campaign, and enemies that evolve and move up the ranks, every playthrough is unique, challenging, and never the same.
We spoke with Ken Seto, CEO and Co-founder of Massive Damage, Inc., about pixel animation, inspirations, and some adversaries we can expect to meet. Read on!
What is the concept behind Star Renegades?
Much like our previous game, Halcyon 6, Star Renegades is a bit of a mash-up. We wanted to capture the essence of the classic JRPGs like Grandia or Chrono Trigger, and blend that with the modern gameplay of newer titles like Darkest Dungeon and Slay The Spire. Our adversary and camaraderie systems allow us to craft a unique story experience every time a player jumps into our game, even for a short play session. There are some rogue-lite elements, but players will not lose any progression when they fail, and characters are revived back at the rebel base, ready to re-join the fray (unless they were captured, of course).
What programs did the team use to create the game's animation?
All of our pixel art animations are hand-drawn (as opposed to rendered from 3D or using Spline) in Photoshop using a tablet. Some characters have upwards of 500 frames of hand-drawn pixel art.
To animate them in-game, we have a custom tool called CATTLE (Combat Animation Tool That Lucky Engineered) that is our timeline sequencing editor for compositing visual fx, sound fx, lighting, and camera movement.
Star Renegades has a procedural adversary system that generates unique enemies and bosses that evolve as you play. Can you tell us a little more about that?
The Imperium is a hierarchy of adversaries, each angling for a promotion, with the eventual goal of becoming the Overlord themselves. They will all remember their interactions with you, should they be fortunate enough to survive a confrontation… or lucky enough to be resurrected following their demise at your hands!
Adversaries are procedurally generated at the start of a new game and when newly spawned, so even if you’ve faced a certain type of unit before, their new traits might make them act differently in combat, sometimes much more effectively. These adversaries can also level-up in the imperial hierarchy, potentially gaining new powers and traits.
Any fallen comrades are also at risk of being captured by special enemy units and corrupted into adversaries as well. Until you track them down and defeat them, or an event occurs that brings them back, you will not be able to use that character in your squad. And even when you bring them back to the Coalition side, these characters might not be quite the same as when they left due to the effects of their corruption.
What are some key inspirations to the game?
Star Renegades definitely wears a lot of its inspirations on its sleeve. On the gameplay side, we’re speaking to classic JRPGs like Grandia and Chrono Trigger, as well as modern classics like Darkest Dungeon, Slay The Spire, and even Dead Cells. Thematically speaking we’re somewhere between Guardians of the Galaxy and Star Wars: Rogue One.
Who is your favorite character?
For me, it’s definitely Wynn Syphex. She’s a natural tough leader type who would rather lead the charge at the front of the battlefield than stay behind while others fight for her. I respect that.
