That thought lingered in my head for the longest time, I had gotten the attention of a couple masters. I wasn't going to be able to avoid them forever, and this temporary mark was all it was temporary. True it never had an expiration date or anything and I could do what I wanted.
I don't have to decide right away, right? I could work on making my decision. I thought
I spent all night thinking about it and by morning I went to the house, nothing said I couldn't go there but he probably was asleep. I walked to the door knowing it'd be the first time I would be there alone with Kaitlyn. I was gonna second guess and come back later but the door opened before I could turn. Curiosity had me as I walked in the mansion and looked around.
Do masters sleep? I thought
It was weird thinking that I was coming to see one of the masters. Though I'd enjoyed playing the duel with him, he challenged me in ways no one else did. It thrilled me in some way and I was relishing another match that is if he'd duel me again. After all he won and I lost. As I walked the familiar hallway I wondered what to expect. No one came in here during the day even if they did no one ever came out. I felt a warm sensation on my neck knowing it was his temporary mark on me that was causing it.
"You came and you come during the daylight." Atem said
"I..wanted to see you but I wasn't sure if you'd grace me with your presence during the day." I admitted
Atem smirked at my confession
"You are the special one. Normal people can't even come and go as they please. Once they enter I would duel them and if they lost they go where the intruders go." Atem said
"The place you put Jake." I said
"Jake, that blonde idiot who gloated about if he returned from the house you would date him. You left without looking back and avoided this place." Atem said
I couldn't deny his words, Jake had put that out there. I was humoring Jake by saying that but I would of never dated him. Not in a million years or another lifetime for that matter. I also did leave on my horse and not look back when he didn't come out. I didn't care about Jake or the consequences he faced but I did want to know where he put the intruders.
"You've been here several times and left several times. You're the only one who has been invited here and could come in without facing those consequences." Atem said as he got close to me and he walked around me till he was behind me. "You still can come in and leave when you want. What protects you now is this mark on your neck."
"The temporary mark." I said
"Well yes, it's temporary till I have your answer." Atem said
"You act like it's a simple choice. I have a twin sister, a younger sister, a horse, my parents. I'll watch them live and die while I would never age." Britt Said
"Kaitlyn couldn't of told you all the perks to becoming a master's mate." Atem said "I can do things other masters can't. Your hearts desire."
"In exchange for taking my soul so no one else can have it." I Said
"There is that part but as I said I can do things the other masters can't." Atem said
It sounded so easy to hear him say that but I didn't know what was going to happen. I also didn't know anything about him. What I did know was he wasn't human and he was something I've never seen before. I was enticed by the idea of him.
"Date me." I said
"What?" He asked
"Date me, if you want me to be yours then date me." I said
"Oh Courting. Date is your modern day term but the correct word would be to court you." Atem said as he
Courting? That word hasn't been used since Ancient times. I thought
"Come back tonight and I'll have something prepared." Atem said
"Alright but I want to duel again too." I said and he nod in agreement
I left the mansion debating what to do and what he might plan. So many things were going through my mind. I hadn't really dated at all but I wasn't even going to give up without a fight. When Night came I decided to wear a nice evening gown wondering if I'd be up all night. I took my horse to the mansion with a coat as the evening air was cool out.
When I arrived on my horse, I carefully got off making sure my horse stayed where I would leave him. I wanted to make sure he was safe so I put him where Kaitlyn always told me.
I know he'll be safe here. I thought
Walking to the house I expected to just open the door myself but when I got there I saw that there was a wolf at the door with blonde hair and ears.
"Welcome Miss. Britt, we've been expecting you." He greeted
"Oh uh thank you" I said as I walked in
"May I take your coat? The master has made preparations for you." He said
"Uh sure." I said as I removed my coat.
The wolf was going to tell me where to go but I'd been here many times and I knew where to go. I walked to the stairs and started my way up the stairs. I knew where the masters room was since this was his mansion. I was nervous about his intentions tonight and what he had planned. My mind was all over the place and I had brought a little handbag with me with my deck in it since I didn't have time to think about what was going to happen. When I made it to the door I noticed it was open already.
Of course it's open. He's expecting me. I thought
Going to the doorway of the room I was a bit surprised by what I saw. The table had a candle lit in the middle of it with a bouquet of roses where I would be sitting waiting for me. The atmosphere in this room had changed since the last time I'd been in here.
"Welcome Britt." I heard Atem say
I looked curiosity having the better of me and I was impressed with what I saw. He had a nice outfit on and even though it wasn't in the room I could smell that he'd had something prepared. This was more than I could imagine and I remembered what he said about my hearts desire.
"Evening" I said
I didn't know what to call him at the moment but the night had just begun.
So much made sense now to me about these masters that were looking for mates to walk this world. Kaitlyn noticed I seemed to be quiet with my own thoughts as she snapped her fingers in front of me. This brought me back to my senses and I looked at her.
"I love my master. It's an eternal commitment and you can wear rings to always leave the mansions they own." Kaitlyn said
"You had your master's child" Britt said
"I did but I know my masters name" Kaitlyn said and she moved my hair showing my temporary mark "Atem's mark on you is temporary."
My eyes widened a bit hearing her say his name..I started backing away. Part of me was jumping to conclusions that he was her master...so why did he want me. Kaitlyn noticed walking over as she stopped me and had me look at her.
"Atem is not my master. Look" Kaitlyn said letting me go and I looked at her mark as she showed me my own at the same time. They were different and the marks didn't match at all. She took my hand leading me to a different abandoned place. It was nicely done and we walked in.
"Mommy!" a little boy said as he ran over to her hugging her.
Kaitlyn picked him up "how's my little boy?" Kaitlyn asked as he smiled "good"
"Kait, you're back." A man said as he walked over hugging her. She kissed him and smiled "I am and I brought a friend so be nice Robert." Kaitlyn said
This must be him... I thought
The male looked at me clearly seeing I was marked..sort of. He seemed to just look at me seemingly noticing that I wasn't scared or anything. Kaitlyn looked up at him giving him a serious look as he smiled.
"You must be Britt, I heard the master who Kaitlyn helps keep his mansion clean found a new girl for amusement." Robert said "You're marked."
"It's not permanent Robert, she's got a choice to make." Kaitlyn said
"You didn't tell her the perks? Immortality to the master's mate in exchange for the mate's soul to be bound to the master." Robert said
"No, she's not persuaded about that. She likes to do things and she has a lot of family." Kaitlyn said
Robert nod "I see, it would be hard to explain why you don't age. Your mother was saying she was losing her mind cause you look the same" Robert said
"What? Kaitlyn your mom isn't that old." I said
"But she is, my grandma is my mom. My sister I let you believe is my mom" Kaitlyn said
I was shocked to hear that, the thought of outliving my parents kinda sent a chill down my spine. I love my family with all my heart and I couldn't imagine leaving them for anything yet Kaitlyn could. The thought of my whole family growing old while I stayed young just didn't seem like an option.
"Thanks Kaitlyn, you gave me things to think about." I said to her
I went home to think about all of it, I didn't see how someone could think about all that. I owed Atem an answer but could I really do it? My sister is my twin, my other half we were born together. Living without my sibings wasn't even a bearable thing.

I wanted to say something but to think he put a temporary mark on me..to know that other things were out there I was blind to see. My thoughts were broke when I felt a hand on my cheek and I blinked being brought back to reality as he had me looking at him.
"I am your master to those outside of this place. If another master tries to touch you I'll be there when they do." He said
I just was quiet and he let me go, I needed to think as I left without saying anything. This whole night had been crazy and I was done with it for now. I didn't want to think of the other masters out there in the world. I got on my horse as I looked up at the window seeing him looking out the window down at me as I had my horse turn to head home.
"Heb, let's go home." I said
Atem's Pov:
She'd not said anything since I put the mark on her, I knew i could have done a few things but that wouldn't get her to stay. She's the only one who I wanted to stay out of everyone I'd been dueling with. Still I had her look at me so I could see her eyes which seemed to break her out of her thoughts.
"I am your master to those outside of this place. If another master tries to touch you I'll be there when they do." I told her
she was quiet and I let her go without touching her again. I knew she needed space and time to think after everything that had gone down but normally she says bye or something but she said nothing which worried me. I walked over to the window watching as she got on her horse and I saw she looked up meeting eyes with me. Before she had her horse head home, it didn't matter where she went. She was mine in the supernatural world.
Britt's POV:
I couldn't sleep at all my eyes were wide open and I knew that I am...no was a walking target in the world I thought once was safe. I eventually fell asleep but I didn't come out of my room for a whole day, my siblings made sure I ate but I was distant from everyone. I didn't know what more I could do and when the following day happened there was a knock on the door.
"Come in" I said
Kaitlyn walked in and sat across from me on my bed. I was overwhelmed with everything that was going on. Kaitlyn shook her head as she thought for a minute before she removed her bracelet showing me her bracelet, she was marked.
"You knew.." I said
"Yes, I have a master out there. I made him prove his worth to me before giving him a claim over my soul." Kaitlyn said "Atem wants you, you're unlike others...he asked about you last night."
"Is Atem your master?" I asked sort of bitterly which maybe was the wrong approach.
"No. He's not, but my mark is permanent and yours" She leaned over moving my hair revealing my neck and his temporary mark. "Yours is temporary."
I realized most of the masters didn't let their claims walk freely which started to make me question and I got on my knees looking at Kaitlyn.
"What does he want? How are you able to walk so freely? Why did you never say anything?!" I demanded
"Love, marriage, kids. A powerful soul to claim for the role of his wife." Kaitlyn said as she looked at me. "I am a master's wife, I have a ring which allows me free reign over where I can go. Also, I didn't think you would be a master's choice or I would have said something sooner."
I sat back hearing her words on what he wanted love, marriage, kids...a powerful soul to claim for the role of his wife. I'd already attracted another master without trying to and he was quick to temporary mark me. Kaitlyn seemed to think for a minute and she smiled.
"He won't claim your soul till you're wearing his ring. So your mark is only that temporary but if you lay with him...you become his even if he hasn't finished the mark." Kaitlyn said
"Lay with him...you mean.." I didn't say it as Kaitlyn nods "the masters are tempting but I swear once you've been with one of the masters another living human will never be good enough. You'll crave for the master you were with...and sometimes you end up with that master's child." Kaitlyn said
I blinked but remembered a time when Kaitlyn disappeared for some time. It was around the time she'd started gaining weight but we'd all assumed she had some medicine causing it. I realized now that she was hiding the fact that she'd been carrying a master's child.
I had gone home that night as I layed in my bed looking at my ceiling. I couldn't get his words out of my heard or that conversation we had just had. He was so calm while he'd said it as I placed my arm where his arm had been near my waist.
"I would want you to stay.." were the words he said
Why me? He's not exactly human and I couldn't just stay there without food and things...what is he? I thought
I drifted to sleep like it was the easiest thing in the world. I'd had quite the night no one would suspect that I went in the house.
Atem's POV:
I paced after she left everything about her was perfect. I wanted her, desired her in ways I couldn't explain. I heard the knock and Kaitlyn was there. I knew she knew more about her than I ever did.
Perfect. I thought
"So your friend is quite polite Kaitlyn." I said to her and she crossed her arms "What do you want with her?" Kaitlyn asked. Always to the point with her, it was and that's why I let her talk to me the way she did. Otherwise, I'd of already called the werewolf and his friend to escort her out. "I want her Kaitlyn. I want...her soul so she can be with me forever." I said, Kaitlyn started laughing and she knew I wasn't to be taken lightly so this must of been about her friend Britt. "She will never give her soul to you, keep dreaming." Kaitlyn said as she turned to leave.
"She's already in danger Kaitlyn, others like me have spotted her. She's a pure soul with nothing that has tainted her, in this world you know certain souls have to have masters." I said that made Kaitlyn stop as she looked at me. For the first time in the seven years she'd been coming here she was scared for her friend. "How do I know you can protect her? No one has seen you leave your mansion in years it's why they say you can't." Kaitlyn said
"I never had a reason to leave, if I have to I'll mark her for myself." I said
"Your mark will never go away, never fade and if you do it without her permission she'll run away from you." Kaitlyn warned before leaving my sight.
I looked out the window looking out at those who walked by. My eyes were open to the unseen world, unlike most of the people.
I waited for her to return as she promised and I had to rest even though I could have gone out in the sunlight. I would if it called for her protection but for now I had to wait. The whole day seemed to go by without me noticing as I got up when it was dark and sat waiting for her. I'd had the chef prepare her something in case she forgot to eat. I was looking out the window when I saw her walking to the mansion but I saw something else.... She was being followed.
I waited till she walked in the room as I walked over approaching her and I covered her eyes. She freaked out for a moment but I whispered in her ear. "You were followed stay still." I said
Britt's POV:
I'd slept most of the day into the afternoon and went about like norma. I prepared myself wearing heels tonight just to go with the dress I wore to tonight. I didn't think of it like a big deal but I mean he lived in that mansion so I wasn't worried. I arrived as usual with my horse and I was walking in the place. On the back of my neck I did have a sense of being followed but I ignored it. So when I walked in to his room I saw him sitting there and before I could say anything he walked over covering my eyes which I started to freak out a bit.
"You were followed stay still." Atem said in my ear
I was followed?! By who or what?! I thought
"I take it you're claiming the girl or is she just a guest?" The man said
"As for you to be concerned, this one is mine. If anyone touches her I'll tear them apart." Atem said
"Mark her" The man said
Atem smirked as I felt him come close to my neck and I freaked out again as I pushed him away. I hadn't lost I wasn't his, but he was making it like I was his. The man laughed at him as he wouldn't let me get away from him. I didn't want this...at least I thought I didn't.
"She doesn't have a master yet. You are lying, this girl isn't yours. She's free for the taking." He said
"No, she's going to be mine. We have a wager going on. You need to leave." Atem said
"Fine, but if she's not marked in two days I'll be back." He said
When he was gone I was shocked. I wondered what I had gotten myself into but I didn't know what to say about that. I worried I was in over my head. He removed his hand and turned me around.
"What was that for?" I asked
"You're drawing others in for your soul. You have to have a master or someone will steal it." He told me
"A Master?" I asked
He nod as he led me over and we dueled, I noticed he took time to have food prepared for me and I ate while we dueled. I was distracted so when I was in the duel I wasn't fully having my attention on it. So he won against me which I was shocked.
"I lost..." I said
"You did, but you were distracted it seemed." He said
"What do you want?" I asked as I got up and was walking away.
I heard him following me and he pinned me to the wall as he had me look at him. His eyes were hypnotizing and he leaned in close as he got close to my neck. I remembered he wanted me to stay...to be here with him when I felt a slight sting in my neck.
"Ah, what are you doing?" I asked
He looked up as he put his hand on my cheek "I put a temporary mark on you, I am your master." He said as he held me close "I will make it permanent if you chose to stay as I want you to." He told me
That night I prepared my deck as I shuffled it and I decided to wear something nice. I was invited to the mansion people go missing it seemed weird to me. Kaitlyn and her uncle always had to clean the place she probably sees a lot. When I was ready I walked out and went to meet Kaitlyn. It was a few minutes before I met her at the mansion.
"Hey you made it and you look nice. The master of the place will appreciate it." Kaitlyn said as she led the way.
Atem's pov:
I awoke as usual but tonight was different than others. The person coming was invited to my mansion. I thought she'd be a good challenge something I haven't had in such a long time. I sat in my chair shuffling my deck while waiting. Time seemed to not matter as I heard a knock.
"Enter" I said
Kaitlyn opened the door as she walked in the girl behind her. I noticed she seemed hesitant but taking in the area. Kaitlyn bowed in respect.
"Hello Atem, I've brought my friend here as you requested." Kaitlyn said
I stood up and walked over taking in her appearance. She'd dressed up which was amusing to see that she could look nice for this.
"Welcome to my mansion…Miss?" I said
"Britt Petrova." Britt said
"Would you honor me with a duel? You have my phone word." I said to her
Reluctantly she agreed and I dismissed Kaitlyn for now. We dueled for what felt like hours and she was good compared to others I'd faced. I wanted a challenge but she rivaled my skill. So when the duel ended in a draw I was shocked. It took a minute before realizing she wasn't weak like others.
"Seems it's a draw." She said
"Yes it seems so." I said
The truth was I smelled her soul how much it ignited with this duel. I didn't want her to leave but I knew only one way to get her to come back. I didn't wish to leave such things in a draw.
"Will you honor me with another duel tomorrow night?" I asked
She seemed shocked to hear such things but she agreed. I was amused she agreed to come back for once I had something to amuse me for now.
Britt’s POV:
I wondered what he wanted with me, besides the fact I was being invited here. No one would believe me if I told them that I’ve walked in this place and made it out. They all think Kaitlyn even lies about walking in and leaving. So when I left I never told anyone about it.
During the day I went about as if everything was normal well as normal as one can get when they have a secret at night. I hanged with my best friends who I did tell and they believed me because they knew I’d never lie to them.
“Be careful Britt.” Miranda said
“Yeah, you don’t know if there is some alternative motive behind his interest and invite.” Zoey said
I nod as I knew those warnings were fair as everything seemed normal. When I returned home to prepare for another night I chose something nice again and then left. As expected we dueled but this night he offered me a drink and Kaitlyn nod showing it was safe as I sipped the drink. I took sips between turns as I wanted to enjoy my time. Soon though it came to a draw again and I stood up finishing my drink.
"Good duel." I said
I looked around as I picked up my deck. I put it away looking at how well this place stayed together. I didn't touch anything out of respect but I felt his arm snake around my waist.
"What do you think?" He asked me
"This place is amazing.." I said
"I spend eternity here alone with my people." He said
I couldn't help but feel sorry for him. I knew his arm was around me but I didn't push him away cause I knew he wouldn't hurt me. I loved the design of this place and how quiet it was here.
"How do you handle eternity stuck inside?" I asked
"I get people coming where they don't belong and I deal with them. You're the first to be invited here." He said
"What an honor to get invited." I said
I started noticing what time it was and I removed his arm as I set the glass down. I knew there was more to this than an invite. I had to ask questions now.
"Do you want me to come back?" I asked
"Tomorrow night. Please" he said
"What happens if I ever lose?" I asked
He seemed hesitant to answer that but he kept his calm.
"I would want you to stay.." He said
"If I refuse?" I asked
"I could offer you everything you'd want." He said
I merely looked at him "and if I win?" I asked
He shrugged seeming not to have an answer. I did though cause I wanted to know where the people who lost ended up.
"If I win you tell me to where the intruders went" I said
He was caught off guard by my demand but offered his hand. I shook hands with him knowing I was in over my head.
