A Happy Halloween!
Niner looked up with wide curious eyes, he'd had bunny ears put on him but this was completely different. He looked at the bright orange shirt and green overalls he'd been put in, his bandana had been changed to an orange one with a jack-o-lantern face on it.
"Alright Nines, look at the camera." He could hear the smile in Molly's voice.
The older boy looked away from his costume and to her phone camera. He heard a quiet click as Molly pressed the button on her screen, taking a picture. It made him smile as he saw her smile, whatever he'd done had been good.
"You are the most adorable little pumpkin, Nines." She said as she pet his head.
"I…. Is being a pumpkin good?..."
"It's very good, everyone will love you… have you gone trick-or-treating before?"
"Um… i… Master Hayes gives strangers candy… um if I'm very good I get some sour candy!" Niner said, hoping that was the answer she was looking for.
"That's the candy giving side of it, you get to be on the candy getting side this year. Now, I think we're ready." Molly said as she adjusted her witch's hat.
"You two look good, get lots of candy. And Niner, remember to say trick-or-treat!" Billie said with a smile, they had cat ears and whiskers drawn on.
Niner nervously held onto Molly's hand as they started walking, starting at the next door neighbor. Going up to stranger's homes made no sense and on top of that he was asking for something he wasn't sure he'd earned. They started up a driveway, gravel crunched under his shoes as they got to the door. He flinched as the door opened.
"Oh, hello! What a cute witch and pumpkin, now, would you like some candy?" The woman asked as she held a bowl of candy.
"Go ahead, Nines. Tell her what we taught you."
"T-Trick….um… Trick-or...or-or-treat." Niner rasped out, his voice trembling as he held out his plastic jack 'o' lantern bucket which also shook with his hands.
"You did very well, here's some candy for you cute little pumpkin." She said and dropped some candy into his bucket.
He stared at it in confusion, then grinned up at Molly. "I…. I got candy!!"
"Yes you did! Because you're a good boy, Nines!" She said and ruffled his hair.
He didn't realize he would be rewarded so well just by saying a few words. This was so exciting and now he wanted to try it out again, he grabbed Molly's hand and nearly ran to the next house. He held out his little bucket to the man sitting on the stairs of the house and smiled shyly.
"Tr...trick-or… um… oh… trick-or-treat!" His voice sounded more confident while still being raspy.
The man smiled and dropped candy into the pumpkin bucket which made Niner bounce excitedly. He waited for Molly to get hers before peeking in to see what she got.
"Miss Molly… this...um. this is a lot of fun." He said softly as he popped a piece of chocolate into his mouth. It was sweet and both Molly and Billie had said he could eat the candy he got.
The rest of the night went the same way, he'd eagerly tell the person with a bowl of candy 'trick-or-treat' and he'd receive a small amount of candy in return. It was a lot of fun and his little bucket was heavy by the time they got back. He'd even stuffed his pockets full of candy that didn't fit. Niner was exhausted as he sat on the floor or Billie's condo, taking his time to sort the candy he'd poured into the floor.
Molly and Billie watched as he sorted the candy he'd very happily collected over the last hour. It was refreshing to see him acting this way, like a person genuinely excited about having candy.
"Who's that pile for, Niner?" Billie asked as they pointed to a small pile of candy off to the side.
"That's for Cera… I gotta make sure she gets her share." He said casually as he put another piece in the pile.
Neither one of them knew who Niner was talking about, they knew he'd mentioned the name before but very little information was ever given. Billie shrugged and let him go back to his sorting, something he seemed very happy to do.
He didn't know much about what this holiday entailed, just that he had gotten something good from it and it made him happy. He hoped Molly and Billie would let him do it again next year. He smiled at the small pile of cand to his side. Maybe Cera could join too.
I've been meaning to write this one for a while idk how it turned out tho. I wrote some of it while I was half asleep. @skunkandgrenade helped me by suggesting it!!

Niner and the Dentist
He hated car rides, they made him sick, he knew that other pets enjoyed them but he couldn't bear to ride in a car if he didn't have to. He curled up in the backseat and buried his face into his arms to try to make himself feel slightly better.
Finally the car came to a complete stop and the engine turned off. Niner popped his head up still feeling sick to his stomach when he realized where he was. A plain white building sat in front of him, he knew it was a pet dentist and he wasn't thrilled to be there at all.
Hayes pulled him out of the car, dragging him toward the doors and after a few minutes managed to pull the boy into the office. Hayes sat down in one of the waiting room chairs, Niner sat on his knees between Hayes's legs so he could both watch the office and stay out of the way. There were two other pets and their owners in the waiting office, one was close to them making the boy growl.
The other pet was one that was sold to be pampered, to be a pet, she had comfy looking clothes on and a soft collar on, she was clean and well loved by her family. Her short blonde hair fell in front of her face as she leaned forward against her own leash to try and make friends with him.
Niner snapped his teeth at her with an aggressive growl. Hayes's hand swept under Niner's chin and forced his head back leaving the boy's neck exposed. Master looked annoyed at best and turned to apologize to the other pet's owner before turning his attention back to Niner.
"Cut it out or I'll leave you at the shelter right now, you waste of space, now knock it off." Hayes snapped clearly having no patience.
Niner let out a soft whine and stayed in that position because Hayes hadn't moved his hand yet.
Finally after what felt like forever, a dental assistant called Niner's name and Hayes just got up and began to drag the boy past the door. A frightened whimper left Niner's throat as he was strapped to a dental chair. He tugged at the wrist restraints but no matter what he did they held fast.
A dental assistant came into his view and he growled, she was enough of a distraction that it was easy for the needle to slide into his arm to administer sedation.
It wasn't long until Niner's head lolled, he was dizzy and couldn't focus on anything for too long. His limbs and body didn't respond like they should have and it felt him feeling disoriented. He faded in and out of consciousness until a particularly sharp pain in his mouth forced him back to consciousness. There were hands and tools in his mouth, his mind was too foggy to really understand what was coming.
Something metal was grabbing a tooth in the back of his jaw, he let out a strangled scream as they yanked the tooth from his mouth. He started struggling to try and free himself from the restraints.
One if the assistants straddled the terrified boy's waist to keep him still while the dentist stuffed his fingers into Niners mouth to start to remove the next one. The metal tool returned to his mouth and wrapped around his next wisdom tooth.
The boy desperately whined trying to make them stop, the pain he was already feeling was becoming agonizing. The pull, the building pressure as the dentist pulled at the tooth until it finally gave way. He could feel it being forcibly ripped from his jaw, he let out another desperate scream one it was removed.
"What the fuck are you doing to him?!" Came Hayes's angry voice as he burst into the room.
All he could see was his pet strapped to a chair with wild fear filled eyes and tears streaming down his face. It made him furious that they hadn't even bothered to put Niner back under anesthetic or anything and had just continued the process.
A mask was placed over Niner's nose and mouth, his frightened pleading whines faded to soft whimpers before he finally fully lost consciousness. He watched as the too bright office room disappeared to darkness.
When he did finally wake up again, he was curled up in Hayes's arms on the couch back safe at home. His head felt heavy and like it was stuffed with cotton. His mouth hurt, it was sore and he wasn't sure he would ever feel like it would work again.
He managed an incoherent mumble that caught Hayes's attention, which led the man to cup Niner's cheek gently and turn the disoriented boy's head toward him.
"You were such a good boy today. You look hungry, let's get you some soup, hmm?"
Even in his drugged up state, Niner was happy to be called a good boy. Master was right, he was starving and would gladly accept some soup. He snuggled his way closer to Hayes and fell asleep, dreaming of laying by the warm morning window
It's me again with yet another request for Niner! Today's request is for Hayes to say, "No, go on, say it." Maybe he's telling Niner to call himself stupid or a pet or some other spirit-killing things. Maybe Niner accidentally talks back after a punishment he feels he didn't deserve, and he clams up in the middle of it, prompting Hayes to say this. Maybe he's talking to Billie, and Billie finally decides to speak their mind about the way Hayes treats his pet. Just some ideas. You're the best! :D
I was gonna go a completely different direction with this but uh... enjoy how deeply ingrained Niner's conditioning and training is.

"Say It"
"No. Go on, say it again, you filthy mutt. Tell me." Hayes says coldly, his stance towers over Niner and radiates hatred.
Niner shakes his head, he didn't mean for it to slip out, he didn't even know where the words had come from. He scrambled backwards as far as he could until the already short leash became taut, halting him almost immediately.
Hayes shortened the leash and pulled the boy close. He raised his hand making Niner flinch just before hitting him hard across the face. It took a moment for Niner to refocus his now blurred vision.
"Say. It. Again. K-9." Hayes ordered in a more threatening and somehow even colder tone.
"I-I'm n-n-no-not a p-pet, I'm a pe-per-person, s-sir." Niner stammered fearfully. He hadn't meant to say it at all. He never thought those words, how they tumbled from his mouth in the first place confused him.
Another sharp smack across his face made him let out a miserable whimper. He instinctively avoided eye contact to prevent any further punishment.
"You're right, you're not a pet, you're a miserable excuse for a pet. You are a filthy horrible mutt." Hayes spat into Niner's face.
The pet began to struggle to try and get away. Something in him broke. "I-I wa-want to go home! P-please!!"
Hayes threw Niner down to the floor, watched him scramble with a wild disoriented look in his eyes. The boy's entire personality shifted from a scared pet to a scared human.
"Please! Please I just… just wanna go home. M-my sister is… my sister. She's worried about me. Please! Plea-" his words were cut off as Hayes spoke.
"K-9-MUT281, down." Hayes said flatly but precisely.
Niner's panicking ceased as his body moved to sit him on his knees, there were still tears flowing down his face. He hadn't moved on his own, his muscles remembered the position well and his frantic thoughts faded to nothing. In only a few minutes, Niner now sat still with a few remaining tears rolling down his face.
"That's a good boy, now, you are a dog, my pet, you are not a person, this is your only life. Got it?" Hayes recited casually as he squatted down in front of Niner.
Niner's eyes had a lost distant look in them, but he nodded softly in understanding. After a minute he shook his head and went back to his normal pet self.
Hayes patted his head gently and affectionately. "Go on and get your blanket, and sit in the kitchen, I'll get you some dinner."
He shook his head as Niner obediently got up and walked off to the kitchen to wait. Hayes had both been dreading and looking forward to the day that the training wore too thin for his pet. A gentle reset was all he needed.

Flashbacks
He kicked and fought with every ounce of energy in his body. The strong arms that held his shoulders and arms firmly behind him were nearly impossible to break free from. His wrists had been cuffed behind him, preventing any chance he had to punch. He had screamed for someone, anyone to help him but no one paid him any mind. Instead of concerned pity-filled glances he only received dirty looks and annoyed eye rolls.
Maybe it was the fact that the van he was being forced into had the logo for the world's leader in human pets, maybe it was because they had referred to him as a mutt, whatever the reason these people didn't care that he was being kidnapped. The company had advertisements everywhere, boasting about the voluntary process and encouraged the citizens to sign up.
He hadn't signed up for this, he wasn't even old enough to be enrolled in the program. Yet, here he was being bustled into a van with no opinion on whether he wanted to be someone's human pet or not. He had heard rumors of the company just taking people against their will, but they were just rumors, only talk meant to scare little kids to behave.
There was a small piece of him that was relieved though, that it was him being taken and not his sister. His sister had been with him, they were finishing up a quick trip to the store. Amongst the commotion he looked around, making sure they weren't forcing her into the van too. Then he spotted her in the small crowd of people.
The only look of fear and concern for him was from his little sister, she was only 15 and was watching her brother being stolen for someone else's purposes. He managed to give her an apologetic smile just as the door to the van slid shut. That was the last time he had seen her, so afraid, it wasn't fair that's how she would remember him.
A hand carding fingers through his hair made him blink and come back to the present. He winced as the world around him changed from that horrible day to the warm living room of his Master's house. He looked up at Hayes who was petting him, there was a look of curiosity across the man's face but it quickly disappeared as Niner stretched and curled in on himself again.
Hayes had watched his pet mumble incoherently in what appeared to be a moment where he was lost in thought. It didn't happen often but when it did there wasn't much that would bring the boy back to reality. Hayes just continued to comb his fingers through the boy's messy brown hair.
Pets usually had mysterious pasts but it was often trained out of them. Maybe he would sent Niner back to get it trained back out of him, or maybe he would save the money and get a better one later.

April Fools
Hayes crept slowly, almost silently into the dining room where Niner usually slept. As expected Niner was fast asleep in his usual sunny patch, it was absolutely perfect. The boy looked so peaceful.
*P O P*
The sound of a handheld confetti canon going off made the pet's entire body jerk as it startled him awake.
Niner's heart was racing as the loud explosion of sound threw him from happy dreams to being yanked into the waking world. He scrambled to get up as colorful confetti fell around him immediately disorienting him.
He turned, confused and scared, the hard wall catching him as he ran face first into it. He only saw a rainbow of color as his body felt weightless, falling to the floor. His back hitting the ground first knocking the air from his lungs, he took a weak gasp of air as his head smacked against the hardwood floor. The color gone, replaced by darkness.
The feeling of air rushing back into his lungs, filling once empty desperate space with warm air. He felt his body convulse and sputter as he struggled to get his breathing back to normal.
As he regained his senses and his vision cleared he saw Master Hayes come into view. The man was smiling as he leaned over the pet.
"April Fools! Enjoy your surprise, K-9? Well after your little nap at least?" Hayes asked the pet.
Niner's heart still felt like it was beating out of his chest, he glanced up at his owner. He hesitated but nodded, fearful panic still very apparent in his eyes. He hated that, it had been loud like thunder and everything had been a blur. He took a shaky breath and whined softly as he crawled under the dining room table to hide.
Hayes only looked pleased with himself, as he stood up and walked away he pulled a small confetti popper from his jacket pocket.
*p o p*
He enjoyed the sound of Niner smacking his already hurt head against the dining room table as he reacted to the popper was priceless. He had dozens more and planned on popping them throughout the day.

Rewards!!
It was the next day and Hayes was standing in his computer room, the lock had been picked by the thief, some small stuff was still missing but most of it was in the bookbag that Niner had. He ran a hand through his hair and sighed, a lot of the expensive tech stuff had been damaged but it was all repairable.
He would mess with all the broken computer pieces later, for now he owed Niner a reward for getting his expensive stuff back. The boy was curled up near a window just sleeping in the warm sun, it was kind of cute. He gave a soft whistle that seemed to rouse Niner from his nap.
"K-9, I'll be back in an hour. Don't break anything." Hayes said in a firm but casual voice.
Niner settled back down in the sun and went back to his nap. About an hour later the sound of the garage door opening woke him up, he listened to the truck doors close and the door to the garage opened. Master Hayes came in with some shopping bags from one of the local stores.
Hayes walked past the boy and went to the kitchen. He set the bags down and rummaged through one to find a small pint of ice cream. He scooped about half of it into Niner's food bowl and looked up to see the boy was staring hungrily at the bowl.
He pulled out a can of whipped cream and put a nice amount of it on top of the ice cream before he picked up the bowl. He walked it over to Niner and set the bowl on the floor.
"Stay... stay." Hayes ordered as he watched Niner lick his lips. Hayes smiled "good boy, go ahead."
"Thank you, master." His voice was still soft from little use as he thanked Hayes for the ice cream.
The boy hesitated but eagerly dug in to eat the ice cream. He hadn't had ice cream in over 6 years and it was just as delicious as he remembered. He remembered that he loved walking to the local ice cream shop with his sister. It made him wince briefly to think about a memory that long ago. Personally, he preferred cookie dough as the flavor but sea salt caramel was just as good. He must've been very good last night with the thief that he received such a wonderful reward.
It was so sweet and cold, there were little pieces of salt in the ice cream that made it taste just right. He had whipped cream on his nose and ice cream on his face as he finished. He looked up and saw Hayes there with a napkin. He wiped the sticky dessert off the boy's face, Niner smiled subtlely at the attention.
"Alright I have one more reward for you, you were very good last night. And you saved me a lot of money." Hayes pulled a soft throw blanket from one of his shopping bags and handed it to Niner.
Niner looked at him with wide excited eyes, he cautiously took the blanket and held it tightly in his hands. He rubbed his cheek against the soft fabric, it was a plain dark blue and had probably only cost Hayes 5 dollars but it meant everything to Niner.
"Thank y-you master! I'll be good, so good" Niner said quickly.
He was thrilled to have his very own blanket and took it back over to the sunny patch to lay down again. He scrunched up the blanket and buried his face into it happily. It wasn't long before he was all tangled up in it and fast asleep on his stomach on the floor. Hayes shook his head with a chuckle and went to start fixing the broken computer parts.
He didn't know why Roger had brought him to some guy's house but he already hated it. He wondered if it was for a punishment or something worse, unsure of what the worse option could be. Roger knocked on the door and tightened his grip on Asher's arm.
"You behave while we're here, Asher. Oh and play nice with his pet?" He said squeezing Asher's arm painfully.
"Ow! Fuck! Geez fine I will!" Asher snapped back only to get a slap across the face.
The door opened and a tall, pretty lanky guy with gray hair and glasses stood in the doorway. He had a smile for Roger but it faltered and fell as he looked at Asher.
"C'mon in. K-9 is in the dining room and just make sure your pet doesn't go on the furniture, I'd hate to have to clean it." The man said as he led Roger to his computer room so they would talk and fix Roger's computer.
"You heard him, get out of here." Roger said as he pushed Asher away toward the dining room.
Thoughts raced through Asher's head, the man had a pet and had referred to it as K-9. There was a good chance it was a dog but he wasn't entirely sure what to think. He looked around at the decor as he awkwardly made his way into the dining room. The house was painted a dark red color with lots of accenting golds and black. As Asher stepped into the dining room fully, he heard what sounded like a growl.
He froze up thinking it had to be an aggressive dog or something like that. He turned his head toward the sound and saw a person, who looked to be a few years older than him, on all fours growling at him from around the table. The sight caught him completely off guard, he expected maybe a dog or a pet like him but the fact that this one seemed to be pretty dog-like made his stomach churn.
"I… hey what the fuck? Are you… are you okay??..... K-9, that's you right?" Asher asked as he nervously dropped down into a crouching position.
Niner growled again though it was softer, he stared at the stranger trying to decide if he was a threat. He crawled forward, hesitantly and saw the newcomer wince. He caught sight of the collar around the boy's neck, realizing he was a pet but different from the kind he was. It threw him off and made him sit back on his knees.
"Do… do you have a name other than K-9… I… are you okay??" Asher asked again.
Asher watched the other pet seem to consider the question, it seemed to make him really think. He didn't think it had been a hard question to answer but maybe it was. He knew he hated looking at what Niner was, he had clearly been trained to be a dog, the very definition of a pet.
"... K-9 goes… goes by Niner too… K-9 is okay." Niner said with a raspy and broken voice.
Asher winced again, he couldn't help but feel bad.
"Niner?... I uh.. I'm Asher… what uh… what do you like to do?" He asked, trying to make small talk, still sickened by the fact the boy in front of him was so dog-like.
Niner seemed to perk up at that and a smile crossed his face excitedly. He scrambled up and grabbed Asher's hand, he felt the other boy flinch but dragged him up. He held Asher's hand in his and carefully opened the back door, he quickly pulled him outside.
The pair now stood in Hayes's fenced in backyard, it was warm and the privacy fence kept them from seeing into the surrounding yards. Niner pulled Asher with him to the soft green grass and flopped down in it, fully waiting for the other boy to follow his lead. He watched Asher sit down in the grass cross legged and just watch.
Niner rolled onto his stomach and patted the grass next to him, he hoped that Asher would understand. Asher hesitated but finally gave in and laid down beside Niner in the grass.
"Th-this is my yard that…. Has the warmest sun. An-and has the coolest shade…. And that" He said pointing at a hole in the fence, "is … is Duke's house.."
Asher picked up on what almost sounded like affection in Niner's voice as he talked about the house on the other side of the fence. Niner continued to ramble in his raspy voice and eventually scooted closer to just press his head against Asher's shoulder.
He dismissed it as hearing things and soon the pair were just snuggled close in the grass, enjoying the warm sun and ability to not worry about their owners for a bit. They had their arms wrapped around each other, Asher on his back and Niner laid on top. Niner's face was buried into the other boy's neck, fast asleep and snoring softly. Asher had his arms around Niner's body, holding him in a tight embrace, his fingers twitched as he mumbled nonsense in his sleep.
They stayed wrapped in each others embrace for hours, fast asleep and soaking in the warmth of the day. Two pets happy to have company and a new friend.

Stupid, awful Mutt
He didn't understand, what had he done wrong? He didn't know what he had done that made his Master do angry with him, he had only done what he was trained to do. How was he supposed to know that the stranger in the house was Master Hayes's friend?
The woman on the couch was still holding her now bleeding arm. Niner could still taste her metallic blood in his mouth, he thought Master Hayes would be proud, that Master would be happy that he did a good thing.
Hayes was furious at the rescued pet he had adopted only a week ago. K-9 had been an okay addition but it was clear that whatever training had been done to him, it overrode his normal instincts and put aggression in its place.
Being underfoot had been annoying but was relatively harmless, but now K-9 had bitten someone, out of his own malice. Hayes wouldn't let it happen again, at least anytime soon.
Hayes grabbed Niner by the collar and dragged him outside, the boy kicked and fought the grip even though he knew it was no use. Hayes threw the boy down into the dirt and just as Niner tried to get himself back up, the older man gave him a swift but hard hitting kick to the face.
"You stupid, awful mutt! Don't you dare bite anyone else or I'll have you in a muzzle 24/7!" Hayes threatened in a harsh tone. He landed several kicks to Niner's stomach before pulling him up off the ground by his collar.
The poor confused boy was trembling in his grasp and whimpering. He tried to desperately beg for forgiveness but it came out as a hoarse whisper. "M'srry.."
"You better be, or you'll be back in the pound, but you won't get to stick around too long." He stated menacingly. Hayes threw the pet down again and clipped a heavy chain to K-9's collar.
"You'll stay there until I remember to come get you." Hayes ordered. Niner whimpered softly and stayed in a kneeling position on the cold firm ground. Before Hayes returned to the house, he gave K-9 a firm slap across the face that made Niner see stars for a brief moment.
Master left him out there, into the cold night. With his old owner he was allowed to hide under the deck to stay warm, but Master Hayes had told him to stay put. He started shivering after a short time but stayed obediently kneeling until his Master came back for him. His body was sore from where he had been kicked, and Hayes's words played on repeat in his head.
"Stupid, awful mutt. Stupid, awful mutt. A stupid, awful bad mutt." He more it played in his head. The more he believed it.
