Behind the Scenes of Utopia - Part Seven
Excerpt from the DWM #519 interview with Derek Jacobi:
When we meet Sir Derek Jacobi in a London recording studio it’s almost a decade since Utopia, his single-episode reign as the Master.
“Is it really?” he marvels. “Of course, a part like that came out of left field for me. I never expected to be asked to be in Doctor Who, and it was a great thrill for me.”
It was a great thrill for the audience, too. For long-term fans, it was the triumphant return of one of the show’s greatest villains, while for a new generation of viewers it was a terrifying introduction to the existence of other Time Lords. Was Derek aware of the excitement at the time?
“People were surprised that I was playing the Master,” he says, nodding. “I had several friends who, when I told them - and I didn’t know they were Doctor Who aficionados - practically screamed in ecstatic excitement, and asked me things like, 'Do you actually say “I am the Master”?’ I said, ‘Yeah, I think that’s what I’m doing,’ and oh, they went berserk! They were all very thrilled.
“It was lovely to play,” he reflects. “I got on very well with David Tennant [who played the Tenth Doctor], and I thought he was wonderful. It was exciting.”

I finally watched both Knives Out and The Glass Onion and holy shit. Top new favorite movies. I'd gladly watch a hundred more of these movies if they staydd this quality. Nostalgic, agatha christie-esque murder mysteries, an eccentric private detective who's always three steps ahead, and incredibly artful camerawork and set design? Absolute masterpieces
The enemies can’t see me if they’re dead
