#Repost from @de_la_kels with @regram.app ... Via @afropunk — Here’s the thing. I’m a white social worker who works within the juvenile (in)justice system here in Philadelphia. On a regular basis, my clients and I reconcile, discuss and process the fact that despite the things I’ve gone through and the mistakes I’ve made, I have not walked in their shoes and I will never truly understand their experiences. When I was their age, I was ACTING A FOOL. I promise you. There are truly instances where I could have ended up exactly where they are. But I was a white girl in the suburbs who had lost her Dad and came from a broken home. People made excuses for me, they tried to understand why I was acting out. WE DO NOT GRANT THESE KIDS THE SAME GRACE AND COMPASSION....We can’t keep doing this. We know that Black and Brown youth experience this in our (in)justice system time and time again. We know the attitude and assumptions that the (in)justice system holds toward these kids. We know that, so often, they are not granted fair legal representation (a basic RIGHT, not a privilege). We know that when white kids in the suburbs commit the same crime, or worse, this is not their same outcome. The number of Black and Brown CHILDREN doing time as adults is insane. We must do better. #BlackLivesMatter #kaliefbrowder #kaliefbrowderstory #blackliberation #thenewjimcrow #13thdocumentary #13th #michellealexander #bryanstevenson #killermike #runthejewels #kendricklamar #jayz #jcole #juvenilejustice #criminaljustice #templeuniversity #philadelphiaeagles @malcolmjenkins27 @chrisemdin @philaprint #SuperBowl52 #socialwork #MSW #mastersinsocialwork
