Got this baby up and playable! It took over a month to find a shop in the U.S. that had the bass drum heads I wanted but with patience and many days and nights searching online, I finally found some Remo fiberskyn P3 ambassador and diplomat heads for the bass drum!! 🍛Doing some cooking recording on black friday! This dish, which is very tasty, needs some special seasoning though. 😉 The maraca and guiro both have roots in South America and west Africa going back thousands of years. It is said that in music, the guiro or a set of maracas are the glue that holds both African and Latin American music together. If you are not accustomed to the folk and popular music from these continents then you may not hear it directly until you see someone playing them but without them, it always feels like something is missing. They may seem like the most "easy" of the percussion instruments to play but they take some serious coordination and practice to have control of the feel or rhythmic interpretation on simple 8'th and 16'th note patterns. 🥁Using what I have to learn on. I originally bought these @sennheiser e609's for live sound reinforcement of my darbuka and a frame drum. For the past week though I've been recording tumbadoras (congas) and I figured I may as well start learning how to gate and EQ toms but still get my sound. I only have a 2 channel interface for the time being, seems like a great opportunity to find out how much of what other freqs are bleeding through. I'm sure the e908's would be a better solution but, no likey that cabling😔.. I've been digging on the Mockroot album for a while now! Man, one of the musical geniuses of our time, Tigran Hamasyan with his Armenian folk, Indian classically phrased, rock/minimalist, electro-esque, acoustic/electric metal and hip-hop inspired jazz fusion has brought so much to the table with his compositions and his ensembles in trio and quintet form.. I wanted to play and record my interpretation of what they are playing before do any transposition. I am basically keeping the 5+5+7+5+5+5 phrasing over 2 bars 0f 4/4 (32 beats) with what I am playing but thinking of it Indian style with konnakol i.e. Takita Taka - Takita Taka - Takadimi Takita - Takita Taka - Takita Taka - Takita Taka. It's not the exact parts that Arthur plays but it's how I am feeling the spaces and the interplay between the bass and synth over the check pattern (if you will) of the piano. I need to sit down sometime and transcribe the general idea of the grooves for the different phrases but I'm having too much fun just listening it or jamming with it. A 24" cymbal at 2846 grams and an "old school" cymbal holder bass drum mount... Does it work?.... Yes! Surprisingly with the updated eyebolt with the grip cuts and using a lock on the arm at the mount, it holds pretty well. I will say though that the lock needs to be made slightly wider about 3-5mm or so. I did have a scare when I went to grab and mute the cymbal and just barely pulled it shifting the weight on the head slightly and the arm fell a few mm to the other side of the lock. Working through Mark Guiliana's playing on the Avishai Cohen Trio song "The Ever Evolving Etude" from Avishai's "Gently Disturbed" album. Mark is definitely among my biggest influences for the last 10 years and the music of Avishai. Ahhh, that one time I went to see Avishai Cohen with Gonzalo Rubalcaba, at The Cotton Club in the Marunouchi building when I was living in Tokyo a decade ago. It was Marcus Gilmore on drums, Yosvany Terry on sax, Matt Brewer on bass, (what?) yes.. and Avishai Cohen on trumpet Hahaha! Ohhhh THAT Avishai Cohen HAHAHA! Here's an up close look at this beauty! It was refurbished Jeff by @kirschdrumsportland for @parrotdiceguitars It's a 50s WFL shell with Ludwig lugs, modern Ludwig throw off and new wrap. A few holes were plugged and white paint applied to the interior so it's basically a Jazz Festival with a little more depth. I think it was originally a WFL Contest or a Super Classic model. Anyway, this baby has a new life to be used for tracking, gigs and lessons! Still waiting for new snare wires and hoops to come in the mail, hopefully no more than another week. For not, I have some S-hoops on it since they were flat and round. S- hoops are not my cup of tea though.
