this is kind of a broad question but whats it like to study creative writing in college? are there lots of opportunities to write/workshop or is it more based on like reading and analyzing ?
i think it probably depends on where you study! my school is very workshop-oriented, especially for poets (i hear a lot of fiction majors complaining about the method here though). all the writing classes i’ve taken here have had required reading but i think they prefer to describe the way we think about lit as “interpreting” rather than “analyzing” (which i think is cool). the thing is though, whatever you study, undergrad sucks (unless your school is really awesome). it’s like high school for big kids. you have to fulfill a bunch of useless requirements and if you’re a creative writing major you hear a lot about MFA programs and everyone’s always talking about where they’re applying, which is a lot of pressure. i’ve been in school for a couple years now and i just recently started feeling comfortable (although i think that might be because i’m socially inept and my school isn’t very centralized). i could probably ask my advisor for you about what schools are more workshop-focused?
