On March 3, writer Mekita Rivas tweeted (see today’s earlier House of Memes post) "Bloomberg spent $500 million on ads. The US population is 327 million. He could have given each American $1 million and still have money left over. I feel like a $1 million check would be life-changing for most people. Yet he wasted it all on ads and STILL LOST," She wisely changed her Twitter profile to private after that.  Last night on MSNBC’s 11th Hour with Brian Williams, Mara Gay, a member of the New York Times editorial board, mentioned the tweet.  Williams responded  "When I read it tonight on social media, it kind of all became clear.  Don't tell us if you're ahead of us on the math...It's an incredible way of putting it."  Neither Williams nor the Gray Lady’s editor noticed the absurdity of the calculation.

It is an incredible way of putting it: incredibly wrong.  $500 million divided by 327 million works out to about $1.50 per American.  Not exactly life-changing. :(
