𝓨OU AND YOUR friends were on your way to school. One of them was giggling about a boy she found attractive from one of the popular all-boys' schools in your area, leaving you to let out a small chuckle. You didn’t really find it all that interesting to look at cute boys all day, since you are too busy dealing with school and finding the perfect job for when you graduate. That’s it. That’s all you have in mind. Boys always went later on since your mother wants you to chase after your dreams with no distractions. But you really didn’t mind your friends talking about boys because, at the end of the day, you are a teenage girl. It’s normal to find boys attractive because that’s life, and you’re also going through hormones. Plus, they never really get the opportunity to date since they go to an all-girls’ school.
“He is so cute! Look at him!” The girl flipped her cellphone, showing someone who looked to be around your age.
“You even got a picture of him?!” Your other friend says before she takes the phone to get a closer look. You peeked through the phone from above since you were sitting on a marble fence as you were waiting to leave.
“Yeah, now I sound like a creep.” The girl said, turning her head to the side.
“Technically, what you are doing is creepy.” You corrected the girl.
The girl threw her head back. “Ugh! Why can’t you ever be on my side for once?!” The girl whined before taking her phone back. You jumped from the fence and readjusted your backpack.
“I am on your side. It’s just what you are doing is creepy.” The other girl snorted, trying to pull back a laugh from what you said.
“Hey!” The girl playfully hit your shoulder, “C’mon! What am I supposed to do? I don’t know how to ask him out!”
“Just directly go up to him and ask him out and say, 'Would you like to go out sometime?” The girl paused as she was thinking about your words.
“I suppose you aren’t wrong about that. That’s not a bad idea for someone who never dated anyone.” The girl said as she tapped her chin.
“You just got to use your brain.” You mumbled to yourself before rolling your eyes.
As the girls continued to giggle about the guy she found attractive, all of you were on your way to the crosswalk, waiting for the street signal to turn red. You let out a sigh as you watched the cars pass by.
“Do you have any plans Friday, [ ୭ ˚. ] ?” One of them says, turning to face you.
You pressed your lips together as you were trying to figure out whether or not you should decline the offer of hanging out at the mall to catch cute teenagers and stay home, or finally give up and join them. Staying home does sound nice, but if you decline this time, their pleading would be annoying.
“Depends.” You answered simply. “I’m not really in the mood to be around a lot of people.”
“What about karaoke? We have our own rooms!” You looked at both of them before letting out a sigh.
“Fine. I’ll go.” Your friend’s faces lit up from your words before wrapping their arms around you.
“Yay! Thank you!” One of them says while tightening the hug.
“Okay, okay! You’re suffocating me! And the light is about to switch,” You broke out of the embrace, making the girls giggle with each other about how they finally convinced you. You couldn’t help but smile to yourself until you noticed the cross guard move in the middle, signalling you to walk across.
“Let’s go,” You say as you start walking ahead of them.
“Hey, wait up!” One of the girls said as they started catching up to you.
You walked down a narrow path down the street, and you noticed how there were kids who were from different schools walking by, and busy adults on their way to work. You noticed how everyone had different lives following in their footsteps. Different careers and roles they are playing in life. It was so simple, and you wonder if it would be like that in the future. You were afraid of what the future would be like for you, and if you would even enjoy whatever job you were getting.
As you were lost in your train of thought, you accidentally bumped your shoulder against something, or someone. The person dropped their cell phone that was in their hand, making them let out an exhale through their nose. You realized you had dropped your cell phone and immediately picked it up.
“I’m sorry!” you say as you bowed, but the person stared at you from head to toe.
Once you finally got a chance to look at them, you realized it was a boy around your age looking as if he wanted to yell at you. But instead, he says, “Watch where you’re going next time.”
You bowed again before continuing your movements across the street. Once you reached the end of the other side, you turned to see if the boy had already left, but he wasn’t fully away since he was walking with what seemed like his friends.
“That boy looked so cute.” One of the girls teased while leaning forward.
“Oh, stop that.” You shot a small glare before walking ahead. “He didn’t even say sorry back.”
“I’m telling the truth! He looked so cute! He kind of looks like he would be your type with that mysterious look he gives.” The girl raised her eyebrows.
You ignored her teasing by rolling your eyes until your phone rang, stopping your tracks. Wait a second… That wasn’t your ringtone. Your eyes widened before you searched through your bag to find your phone, which, when you pulled it out, you realized didn’t have your stickers.
“Shi-” You opened the phone to find an unfamiliar name. “Guys, I grabbed the wrong phone on my way back.”
“Wait, what?!” One of them says, rushing over to you. “What do you mean you grabbed the wrong phone?”
“It’s not mine. When I was walking across the street, I accidentally bumped into that guy and dropped my phone.” The girls realized you were starting to panic from the tone of your voice, so they went beside you.
“It’s okay.” One of the girls placed her hand on your shoulder. “We can try to call your phone through here.” You nodded slowly at the girl’s words before going to the call icon and dialing your phone number.
MEANWHILE FROM THE BOY’S PERSPECTIVE
The boy had one backpack strap hanging from his arm while resting his hand in his pockets. He walked down the sidewalk with his friends, who were annoying him. Even though they were his friends, he couldn’t help but wish they would shut up for the whole walk, but he kept it to himself. So far, all he had heard was that his friends were spying on the girls who came from an all-girls school not too far from where they met up.
“I bet you two hundred yen the girl will say no,” Minami says to Noda.
“Why’d you say that? You don’t believe that I can get a girl, and you can’t?”
“Well, that’s because most of them reject you badly.”
“Oh, c’mon! Just believe me once. Shin, what do you think?” Noda turned to face Shin, whose attention was drawn to the determined kid’s face.
“Why does it even matter?” Was all that the quiet kid said before continuing his path.
“Hey, just place a bet. Either Minami or I will get a girl first.” Noda used his thumb to point at the other, whose eyebrows furrowed in confusion. Shin paused as he looked at both of them.
“Why can’t either of you be a choice?” He mumbled to himself before he walked ahead.
“As usual, he won’t participate.” Their other friend, Uchi, says as a smile appeared on his face.
“Oh, so you think you can get a girl before us?” Noda leaned his head forward in a fierce way.
“I know I can. I don’t have to challenge myself against you losers.” A cocky smirk played at the corner of Uchi’s lips, which made the two boy’s jaw clenched.
“What did you say?!” Noda and Minami said in unison as they ganged up on the blonde-haired boy, who was laughing to himself.
“Hey! Give him a break!” Shin shouted from a distance. When the boys stopped to hear him clearly, they shot glares at each other before running over in his direction.
“Since when were you so ahead?!” Minami says as he reaches him.
“You guys are just slow.” Shin reached into his pocket to grab his phone.
“Are you going to call Kuma?” Uchi went beside him.
“Yeah, that’s what I’m doing.” Once Shin grabbed the phone, his eyes knitted in confusion. He watched as a keychain rattled against the back of the phone.
“Oh, so is pink now your color?” Noda teased.
“This is not my phone.” Shin looked around the phone until he heard it ring. He noticed the dialer was automatically set as ‘unknown number’.
“Answer it. Who knows if it’s the person.” Uchi nodded his head, signaling him to do so, which Shin did. Shin pressed the answer button and pressed it against his ear.
“Hello?” Shin answered
“Hello,” A girl’s voice spoke. “I believe that you are the person whom I bumped into earlier, but we had accidentally switched phones.”
Shin moved the phone down from his ear. “It’s the girl.”
“A girl?!” Noda and Minami’s eyes widened
“Are you able to meet up after school to return our phones, please?” The girl said.
“Yeah. Let’s meet up at the cafe across the sidewalk.” Shin insisted, agreeing with the girl’s idea.
“Okay, thank you.” The girl thanked him before hanging up. Shin moved the phone away from his ear before looking down at it.
“You didn’t say you bumped into a girl!” Noda slapped his hand on Shin’s shoulder.
“I don’t have to explain everything that happens to me.” Shin shoved the other’s arm off of him. The boys followed his tracks as they were making their way to the school.
And like usual, their homeroom teacher greeted them by going beside them, which irritated the boys, but they didn’t bother to do anything.
“Isn’t spring so nice? Romances and flowers bloom beautifully and peacefully.” Yankumi’s attention was drawn to the sky as she watched the tree petals fall before drifting back to the boys.
“Sure,” Uchi’s brows furrowed as he was moving away from her. Yankumi’s smile never faded as she was looking at them until a rattling sound caught her attention.
As she was searching for the sound, she noticed it came from Shin’s phone. “That’s a cute keychain!”
“It’s not mine.” Shin placed the phone into his pocket.
Yankumi’s eyes widened worryingly. “You stole someone’s phone?!”
“I bumped into this girl on my way here and dropped my phone. I didn’t realize I lost it until I was trying to call Kuma.” Yankumi nodded to his response.
“Just please make sure to give it to her right away,” Shin placed his hands in his pockets before walking ahead of her.
AFTER SCHOOL – 3:34 P.M
You were on your way to the cafe by yourself, having to convince your friends not to tag along so they wouldn’t embarrass you. Once you opened the door, all of your senses came to you in an instant. You smelled the heavenly coffee as it was brewing in the coffee machine, desserts being passed around to the customers, and all of the sounds of lively chattering. You grabbed the phone to dial your number. When you held the phone to your ear, your eyes scanned the area.
“I’m over here,” The boy answered from the other side, making you look around again until you noticed the same boy’s hand raised while the other hand held the phone.
You hung up the phone and rushed over in his direction. When you reached his table, he pushed your phone across the table, making you give him his phone back in exchange.
“Thank you so much!” You bowed, and the other nodded slowly. “Can I order something for you in return?”
“You don’t need to. You already returned my phone, so it’s even.”
“Please?” The other took a moment before sighing.
“Fine. You can order one of the desserts.” You nodded before going to the front. The boy watched as you were talking to one of the baristas who was assisting, fidgeting with his fingers before resting them on the table.
Once you were done, you sat down at the table. “It will be here in a few minutes.” The other nodded, crossing his arms as he was getting adjusted into the seat. “What’s your name?” You asked.
The boy’s eyes drifted to yours. “Shin. Sawada Shin.” You nodded.
“I’m [ ୭ ˚. ].” The boy nodded as well. “I’m surprised your school allowed you to dye your hair.” You pointed at the Oreo haircolor, mixed with dark brown and a dirty blonde.
“They really don’t care what we do.” You scratched your head in confusion, but didn’t question it.
“Interesting.” You locked your fingers together.
In the past few minutes, none of you bothered to say anything, leaving you two in comfortable silence. Finally, some peace. Both you and Shin said the same thing at the same time in your heads.
“Here you go!” The barista from the front placed your coffee and your desserts on the table. One was a coffee cake, and the other was a strawberry cheesecake. Shin watched as a smile spread across your face once you saw the cake.
Shin took the plate of coffee cake. “Thanks.” He says without looking.
“Of course.” You replied before taking a bite out of the cake. He watched as your face softened from enjoying the food. Each bite became more satisfying as the flavors burst in your mouth.
TEN MINUTES LATER
You and Shin finished your desserts, which enlightened your mood. Shin stood up and placed his phone in his pocket as you grabbed your backpack from the chair and slung a strap over your shoulder.
You turned to face the boy, “It was nice to meet you, by the way, Shin.” Your lips curved into a soft smile, and you didn’t expect anything in return. All he did was nod and grab out his cell phone, which was your cue to leave.
Shin’s eyes followed your figure as you opened the front door and closed it with the bell decorations jingling, echoing through the small shop. Maybe he should’ve said something, but like the nonchalant, laidback person he is, he believed he didn’t need to respond to everyone. So, he just hoped that you two would cross paths again in the future so he could give a proper thanks for the meal and his phone.
OUTSIDE THE CAFE - 6:34 P.M
The sun set behind the thick clouds, and the streetlights beamed. You knew that your mother would be worried if you didn’t come back in the next thirty minutes, so you had to rush over before you got into trouble.
The sounds of your footsteps hit the concrete as you stepped over some leaves. Before you could take another step, you felt something brush against your leg, which stopped your tracks. Your eyes landed on the problem; your shoes were untied. You blew air out of your nose in frustration before bending down to tie it. As you were tying your shoe, you got startled when you heard a whistle.
“Hey, cutie.” You instantly stood up and turned around. You noticed it was someone around your age with a gang of friends beside him. You glanced down at their clothes, which you remembered were from an elite all-boys school that wasn’t too far from the neighborhood. “Where’d you off to?”
Your grip tightened around the strap, and you decided to walk away to ignore the situation.
“Hey! I’m talking to you!” The boy grabbed your shoulder, which you tried to shove off, but the grip became stronger. “Why don’t you have a good time with us? Come and join us.”
“Let me go! I don’t want to hang out with either one of you!” You say as you were trying to escape his grip. In an instant, you bit his arm, which he let go with a groan.
Before you could finally escape them, one of them lifted you over their shoulder. “Let go of me! Help! Someone, please help!” Your voice echoed through the neighborhood.
“HEY!” You heard a familiar voice in the area, making your eyes widen. The boys turned to face the sound that belonged to whoever it was, which turned out to be…
Shin?! You thought to yourself.
Shin’s jaw tightened, and he lifted his head, “Let her go!”
“Who the hell invited you?” The leader says, stepping in front of him. Shin shot a glare at the boys. You noticed his hands were forming into a fist, but it seemed like he was pulling himself back.
“Wait a second.” The leader chuckled to himself. “You’re from Shirokin High, aren’t you?” Your brows furrowed in confusion from the boy’s words. “You’re a loser just like everyone else in that damn school.”
Shin glanced down at his fit before looking back at the kid. “I’m not going to repeat myself. Let her go.”
Before Shin could make a move, a woman went beside Shin, and she removed her ponytail from her hair.
“Let the girl go!” The unknown woman shouted
“And who might you be?” One of the boys says.
“I’m the boy’s class teacher, and I won’t let you mess with him or the innocent girl!” You heard determination through her voice, as if she were prepared for this very moment. Shin’s eyes landed on yours as his brows knitted, and he gave you a certain look, displaying “I got this.”
Before one of the boys could swing first, the woman punched him in his stomach, kicked him to the side, and started punching the rest. The boy who carried you rushed out of the circle, but before he could leave the area, Shin punched the boy in the jaw. As the boy loosened his grip, Shin pulled you away from him.
“You okay?” Shin asks as he rubs his own knuckles.
You nodded, “Yeah, I’m okay.” You heard the other boy’s footsteps approaching, making you turn quickly with your eyes wide, but the woman punched him before he could lay a finger on you two.
The woman swung her head to the side to move her hair away from her face. “You guys are useless. What you’re doing is just pure violence. Real fighters go after their opponents, not innocent people.”
The leader shot a glare, showing no interest in what she was saying. “If I were you, I’d leave now.” The woman bent down to their level. “Or do you want another knocking?” The boys instantly stood up and ran away.
As the boys ran away, your mouth dropped. “Wha- what was that just now? How did you do that?” Your eyes drifted to the woman. “Thank you. I really mean it.” You bowed. “Thank you so much for saving me.”
The woman gave you a warm smile. “You don’t need to thank me. You needed help.” You mirrored her smile before it dropped once you saw Shin resting his hand on his fists.
“Shin! Are you okay?” You grabbed his hand to examine it. Shin didn’t bother moving back as he watched you move open his hand to see any more injuries.
“I’m okay. I’ll be fine. I just need to wrap it.” Shin moved his hand away.
“Let me help! I have a first-aid kit at home. Please. I can help both of you since you helped me.” The woman placed her hand on your shoulder.
“I’m alright. You don’t need to do that. You can help him, though.” Before Shin could protest, she interrupted. “Do you want me to bring you home?” The woman asks you.
“No, I’m fine. My house is down there,” You pointed towards the direction of your house, to which the woman nodded.
“Get home safely.” You bowed, “And no need for formalities.”
“But-”
“Just help him in return. He came all this way to save you after all.” You turned to Shin, who drifted his attention elsewhere. Once you turned back to face the woman, she had already started walking away.
You opened your mouth to say something, but you closed it. “Follow me. I promise it will be quick.” Shin nodded as he followed you.
AT HOME
After settling into your house, you grabbed the first-aid kit and laid out the needed supplies for the wavy-haired boy.
“I told you I could do it.” Shin’s eyes landed on the cotton and alcohol in front of you before making eye contact.
“I wanted to do it, though.” You poured alcohol on the cotton. You saved me.”
Shin tilted his head. “You’re really not going to give up on that, will you?”
“What?” Shin stared at you. “What? I’m being serious.”
“Using the same answer as in I saved you.” Shin’s eyes never left yours, even when you’re focusing on something else.
“But you never told me to stop, did you?” You glanced at him before patting the cotton on his injury to disinfect it. “So you’re from…” Shin looked up at you, waiting for you to continue. “You’re from that school?”
“What about it?”
“Nothing. It’s not like I think of you weirdly. In fact, I think what you did was very kind and not what people would expect from an allegedly bad school.” Shin chuckled.
“I wouldn’t use the term kind.”
“Then what kind of word would it be then?” Shin didn’t answer back, earning a smirk from you. “So, the word is kind.” The corner of Shin’s lips crooked to the side as he was scanning around the area.
As you were about to grab the wrapping bandage, Shin spoke up. “What school do you go to?”
“Yamanashi High. The all-girls school is a block away from the cafe.” Shin’s eyes dropped to the uniform as he was collecting his thoughts. “Also, how do your teacher know how to fight? That was pretty cool what she did back there.”
“She said she took martial arts when she was younger.” Shin came up with a lie instantly to hide the reasoning behind his teacher’s fighting. Even if he wanted to tell you the truth, he couldn’t because who knows if you'll see him in a different way than how you’re seeing him now.
You nodded. “One day she should teach me.” You joked, but the other didn’t let out a sound or change his facial expression. Instead, he stared before looking around. “Are you able to pull up your sleeve?” Shin nodded as he followed your instructions.
You grabbed the wrapping that was stored inside the kit and began measuring the size of his hand with the polyester material before slowly wrapping it around it. Your movements were steady and precise as your eyes were focused on what you were doing. Shin was impressed by your wrapping skills, but once again, he kept his words to himself.
After you finished wrapping his hand, Shin pulled his hand back and nodded in approval of your work.
“Thanks,” Shin says while pulling down his sleeve.
“Of course.” You gave a quick smile before closing the aid kit. “You’re free to leave now.” Shin stood up and pushed the chair back against the table.
“Thank you again. For returning my phone and doing this.”
“You already said it. You don’t need to repeat it.” Shin just stared for a few moments before going towards the entrance of your house. You followed his steps as he opened the door.
You watched as he walked down the street, and you let out a relaxed sigh. Before you decided to go back inside, someone shouted in the distance.
“ [ ୭ ˚. ] !” Your eyes widened as you paused your movements. You turned your head to meet the other’s eyes.
“When will I see you again?” Your mouth parted as you were trying to find your words.
Your lips curved into a smile, “Any time. Can we exchange numbers?” The boy approached your figure, grabbed his cell phone, and gave it to you, and in exchange, you gave him yours. After a few moments, you placed your phone back in your backpack, and he placed his in his pocket.
“See you later,” Shin nodded at your words and watched as you disappeared into your house.
Shin didn’t even realize he was smiling until he heard a familiar voice speak up. “Is that a smile I see?” Shin’s smile faded before clicking his tongue against his teeth.
“Where did you come from-.” The boy was interrupted by the sneaky woman’s words.
“You already like her, don’t you?” Yankumi playfully nudged her shoulder against his.
“Stop saying weird things like that.” Shin shoved his shoulder away before walking away.
For the first time, Shin finally found something worth waiting for in the future. Something that can make him enjoy hanging out other than being with his friends most of the time.
