This beautiful novel was loaned to me by one of my best friends who fell in love with its loveable male lead, the charming message behind the story and knew that I would feel the same way. I absolutely did, this was such a fantastic story with real heart and soul poured into every moment. Our title character, Albert Entwistle lives a quiet, simple life with is beloved cat and rarely interacts with anyone beyond a polite “how do?.” He likes the predictable routine of his role as a postie at the Royal Mail and seems content with his lot. That is, until he receives a retirement notice and realises how little he has been living. With the help of a new friend, Albert decides to really enjoy life and that includes looking for the man that got away all those years ago, George. Things didn’t end well between them but Albert is determined to find out what has happened to him and how he’s been managing all the years they have been apart. This novel is packed full of feel good moments. Albert is instantly endearing as a character and I would be surprised at anyone who doesn’t end up rooting for his happiness whilst he works on changing his life. There are emotionally difficult parts, that’s for sure but it’s worth it for that bubble of joy and satisfaction that you feel by the end of the narrative. Matt Cain has created authentic and memorable characters in this novel that linger in the mind long after you’ve finished. I couldn’t recommend it any more!
