This enormous marble obelisk soars to 555 feet and was built as a tribute to first president George Washington. Construction of the monument – which was originally intended to comprise a large pantheon as well as an obelisk – began in 1848, but funds soon dwindled. Work halted and wouldn’t begin again until after the Civil War. It recommenced in the 1870s, under the eye of president Ulysses S. Grant, and the landmark was finally dedicated in 1885. It’s seen here, partially completed, in the 1860s.

"About the time of Abraham Lincoln’s long funeral tour, April 21 to May 3, 1865, enterprising vendors produced mourning corsages featuring black silk ribbons adorned with small circular photographs of the president. The likeness is a tintype copy of a portrait from February 9, 1864, that Anthony Berger had made of President Lincoln in Mathew B. Brady’s Washington gallery. The corsage would have been worn on one’s lapel and then carefully preserved as a memento mori of the war’s final casualty."

This is a rare photograph of slave children from the Civil War era, possibly the early 1860s, found in an attic in Raleigh, North Carolina in 2010. Documentation with this photo read “detailing the sale of John for $1,150″, which was not a small sum at the time. This photograph was taken by Timothy O’Sullivan, an apprentice to the famous Matthew Brady who photographed President Lincoln. Surviving portraits of slave children from the Civil War era are very rare.

Mathew Brady Arranging the Bodies

On a mountain flat with snow a blue cloud paints a last touch of life. There’s endless harm in trying a dead body on for size. The gentleman stands out in every detail, except color. He considers his life of a madness that breaks unexpected (one boy had a sweetheart he wore her hair round his finger it kept it from falling off with the rest) or comes also if he composes it (lift one eye shut, put rifle butt in the slack jaw of soldiers decomposing). He fell in love like a woman in the folded arms of a drying sweater: touched one shoulder and a whole platoon was affixed with smiles. Teeth already loose falling from their envelopes thick folded letters in a dead white mist.
