I got to sail with Call of the Sea for a few days in the San Francisco Bay, taking their sailing skills workshop. It was an amazing, wonderful, and incredible experience. I learned so much and understand tall ships a lot better now. The ship I sailed on is the Matthew Turner, a replica of the 1891 Brigantine the Galilee designed by shipbuilder Matthew Turner.

Each day was split into lessons and sailing. Lessons included learning the ropes, sails, elementary navigation, sail theory, and going aloft! Sailing around the bay was lovely. We tacked (bow/head of ship through the wind) around and jibed (stern of ship through the wind) once. We used fore and aft sails (triangle-shaped sails) every day and the upper topsail (a square sail) twice.

I finally got to see what actually happens on tall ships, learning by actually doing work on the ship. I'm now able to better recognize the names of ropes/sails and understand what steps need to be taken to successfully sail.

Here I am aloft! It was amazing (after the initial height uneasiness ofc)! Spotting whales, dolphins, and seals all roughly 20 feet from the ship was also incredible.

I can't wait to use what I learned by applying it to history and hopefully to sail on more tall ships :)

saw your marlin post cross my dash and within the span of the next hour found myself booking a day sail in the san francisco bay. im not in the place for it myself right now but i keep forgetting that living full time on a sailing ship is just one of those things you can do if you try hard enough youre literally living my dream. also while we're here would you happen to know any good volunteer or other hands-on sailing programs around the sf bay area? i know it's a bit farther south than your ship goes lately

Had to ask my San Diego born captain for your question, and got the immediate response of Matthew Turner! It looks like she does a similar program to us re: paying to learn to sail, and Cap doesn't quite remember what their volunteer program is like if you don't already have experience, but I heard in a couple days we'll be having a volunteer on board who comes from there, so I can ask for you then! Posting this now just to have it out there, but I'll reblog with more when I talk with Sam :)

EDIT: Was informed I should probably clarify, but we aren't sailing in SF! We just have a partnership going on with Matthew Turner, where they promote us and we do the same for them. So if you're expecting to see us while you're there, sorry! We stay in Puget Sound for the time being

How would the ROs react if MC waited until they were in a deep relationship to tell them that they were a virgin and didn't tell them before because they were scared that the ROs would change their minds about MC, and all of these thoughts were due to past experiences

Alexander/Alexandra: “I understand.” A look of complete warmth exudes from their usually icy gaze. The smallest of smiles quirking their lips as they gently nudge your shoulder. “We don’t have to do anything if you’re uncomfortable. I’m more than fine with waiting for you to be ready. Damien/Diana: Their earlier smirk falls away as a look of adoration replaces it. “Darling,” they coo, bringing one hand to cradle your cheek. “I could never be disgusted or disturbed by something that means so much to you. I’m honored that you’ve shared this with me now and even more-so that you didn’t wish to lose me. But, I implore you, to understand that you’re stuck with me now. I love you, not some silly expectation, and nothing will ever change that.”

Henry/Helena: “I know you’ve always been squeamish about that.” They interlace their fingers with your own, placing a light kiss to your knuckles, as an airy chuckle escapes them. “I’m glad that you’ve finally told me what has always bothered you so but, I hope, that you’ll understand that I’m not going to leave you. I’ve already made that mistake once.”

Evan/Eva: A heated flush appears on their cheekbones as they duck their head. Hazel eyes suddenly finding the tiled floor much more interesting as a small breath escapes through their nose. “I didn’t realize we were in the same boat.” They peer up through their lashes. “It seems we have more things to learn together, huh?”

Justin/Jennifer: “Well, fuck,” they breathe out in one breath as they rub the back of their neck. A small smile quirking their lips in order to soothe the worry they saw their statement cause within you. “I didn’t mean that in a bad way but I just didn’t realize I was going to be your first. I just knew damn well that I was going to be your last.”

Matthew/Madison: “Oh.” Their head tilts to the side as they try to figure out why anyone would care about such a thing. A frown furrowing their brow as they couldn’t do so. “I’m not really sure why anyone would leave someone else because of that but I’m glad that it’s led you to me. I promise you that you’ll never have to worry about anything like that.”
