So. The We Are couples. This show has been amazing so far and with only one more episode to go, I just really need to get my thoughts about the couples off my chest, so let me just-
PhumPeem: My favorite, no contest. Sure, they had a really stupid start (almost had me stop watching We Are the moment the slave deal was mentioned just for how stupid it was) but damn did they manage to turn that one around. I adore their dynamic and the way the show manages to make them believable, how they mix bouts of levity with just the right amount of serious scenes and earnest conversations. Not to mention how utterly lost to each other they are, the way both of them seem to have just said ‘screw it’ where it comes to their defenses the moment they got together… Just breathtaking to watch. The other couples are good, some of them even excellent, but I’d happily watch PhumPeem fall deeper and deeper in love every scene for hours on end. 10/10, no notes (except for how I’m already despairing at the thought of there only being one more episode to go).
TanFang: Immediate second. I simply adore them and the show gave us just enough background on their characters for what should be a ludicrous dynamic to be simply perfect. Kudos to the showmakers for making it feel like a warm hug every time Tan goes on another ‘but my babe!’ rant, making Fang near enough glow. The contrast between Tan’s open devotion and Fang’s quiet adoration is just stunning.
QToey: This is a strange one. I adored them in the beginning, loved the way the show managed to give so much of their backstory without seeming superfluous in the overall plot. But now that they’re together they are just kind of… there? They are perfect and cutesy and clearly in love but that’s about it? I’m just not really invested in them any longer. (I'm really really hoping they’ll get something of a revival in the last ep, if only because they were vying for first place at the start of the series and I would love if they got some of their depth back before the end.)
ChainPun: Fucking adorable. I was mostly meh about them until the last two episodes, but now I want them so badly it is somewhat impressive in and of itself, considering that they barely get any screen time. Still, only third place but solely because they lose in comparison to my two favorites… so how about a series with these two as the protagonists? Hm? Can we make that happen? I’d love to gush about ChainPun being adorable as the main couple.
And then the amazing last addition of MickMatt (MickMattBeer?): Oh gods, did I not see that one coming but I want it so badly now. Either the couple or the throuple, I don’t care which one. That would be just amazing and kudos to the showmakers for getting me hooked with about 12.5 seconds of content crumbs in total. (Although, if it ends up MickMatt, can I petition for Beer to actually be aroace and everyone already knows about it but no one thinks it’s anything of particular note, so it doesn’t really come up beyond a ‘well yeah, obviously’? That would be an amazing addition to an already perfect show.)
Then again, if I had to pick a favorite relationship in this entire series, it’s definitely the friendships. The way this show manages to make platonic relationships the core of everything is the best thing ever and I’m going to miss We Are so badly just for that. Yes, the couples are amazing and I’ll be stuck thinking about all of them for a while, but I’m fairly sure it’ll be years until I’ll find something that compares in terms of the friendships alone. I’m so very grateful for this wonderful piece of media they gave us, all the while already dreading its end.
On that note… is there any way of getting a spin-off or a sequel (or ten) or anything, really, that occasionally lets us bask in the We Are glow again after Wednesday? Pleasepleaseplease.
