Ya know, in Knockaround Guys, Taylor pushing Matty out of the way and taking the bullets isn't the only instance that proves how much he cares. It's through out the entire movie.
The fact that he went to Montana at all, to help Matty. He was on parole and wasn't supposed to leave the state until another 18 months. But he did anyway, for Matty. He risked going back to prison, probably for life, for Matty.
Then in the Sheriff's Department, when Decker starts beating Matty, he rushed to his aid. And though Deputy Ward startled him with the shot gun, though he demanded Taylor to turn around, Taylor initially didn't. He kept his eyes on Matty and you could see how difficult it was for him not to go and protect his friend. He didn't turn around until the Sheriff pulled Matty into the same room, even when at gun point. He only turned around because he knew that if he got shot, he'd not be able to save Matty from Decker.
Then at the bench scene, Taylor told Matty to go home and leave him there instead. He doesn't care if he dies - he only cares if Matty dies.
That's like the most beautiful thing in the world to me. The guy was willing to literally die just so Matty wouldn't.
He's not like this in general, either. He wasn't willing to die for Scarpa, or Marbles. Just Matty.
Taylor mentions his mom in the movie too - he was even willing to leave her behind to save Matty.
There's no question who the most important person in his life is. It's honestly heart warming.
That pairing needs so much more love.
