THEORY RANT

OKAY I need to get this off my chest. I know I’m not special. People have probably already said this and some of this people have definitely already said BUT LET ME piece things together please. I’m excited

So going with the theory that some wundersmiths are held captive by wintersea to control/co-erce Squall hence the “shared enemy” and his love of Nevermoor etc etc. WHAT IF the reason we only know of Morrigan and Squall as current wundersmiths is for THAT reason - because no one’s reincarnated yet because the others are STILL ALIVE. Anddd THENNNNN WHAT IFFFF. If maud Lowry IS Mathilde Lachance WHAT IFFFFFFF the wundersmiths are being held captive in those GLOBES that keep people preserved as they are dying!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They might not be the exact same globes as that’s a bit obvious OR MAYBE IT ISNT who knows, but that same concept! Whoever of the wundersmiths that Morrigan and anyone else alive has reincarnated/descended from are obviously deceased based on that logic, but the rest could be held in the globes preserved since the massacre. THOUGHTS?!

These lines are always particularly fascinating to me when reading this chapter because there's so many ways you can interpret them. We know that Lowry throughout this interaction is lying to Morrigan so much so that obviously raises the question of: does Lowry genuinely mean what she's saying here or is this just another attempt to try and get Morrigan on her side and using a shared commonality?

The way I view it (and by extension Lowry as a character) is that she does genuinely believe the things she's saying about women and girls but her beliefs don't matter because she doesn't make any effort to meaningfully change the lives of girls who weren't born lucky. Yes, she's a woman and the most powerful person in the Republic but that doesn't change the fact there are girls who are going to be spending their lives being overly apologetic whether they want to be or not because they were forced into being a servant for a rich person because they were denied a secondary education. Statistically there's probably at least one girl every Age who has to take the blame for everything because of a lie Lowry's party actively works to maintain. I do believe Lowry has probably experienced some hardship because she is a woman but what she does with that is systemically oppress other groups, which to me intersects really well with the series' themes of queerness, disability & prejudice

Squall's role in the Wintersea Republic

So, i'm sure other people noticed this but when Squall approaches Morrigan as Mr Jones, the first time, he talks about how Morrigan will be the one giving to people, feeding people by using wunder etc etc. I always thought it was implied that as the ages passed, Wundersmiths began feeling tired of being used for their powers, especially in the case of fixing things, helping people, creating new being for people (if that makes sense) But Squall, in the first book, says it like it's something to be grateful for but as you go through the books and reach the Hollowpox, you kind of feel this tired, more so aggressive and expectant feeling emanating from him as Morrigan continuously saves Nevermoor from danger.. My point is why would Squall, who committed the Courage Square Massacre and most probably got tired of the expectations of being a Wundersmith, go to the Wintersea Republic, where there are evidently more restrictions and he is used for his gift far more... (would love theories)
