Going by one legends story, Maul was separated from his mother as an infant because she wanted him out of what was essentially slavery on Dathomir, though tragically ended up in the hands of Sith, brought up to know nothing but the dark side. He didn’t have a choice but to be a soldier for Sith, and the clones don’t have a choice but to be soldiers for Jedi.
So, yeah. You can see the commiseration there.
And his regiment would have really badass armor, I already know. It’s just something I’d really like to see, like:

Maul: don’t talk to me or my commander or my captain or my ...
