A mysterious hound who once haunted the soldiers of Peel Castle nightly. Despite having grown used to its presence, the soldiers could sense the danger it posed. That is until the night one guard's wits were clouded by drunkenness.

While the horrors the guard witnessed remain unknown, the hound's favored passage was sealed, so that the beast would never have the opportunity to do it again.

English poet and topographer George Waldron documented the Moddey Dhoo (or Mauthe Doog) in his book History and Description of the Isle of Man published in 1744. Waldron wrote: “They say that an apparition called, in their language, the Mauthe Doog, in the shape of a large black spaniel with curled shaggy hair, was used to haunt Peel Castle; and has been frequently seen in every room, but particularly in the guard-chamber, where, as soon as candles were lighted, it came and lay down before the fire in presence of all the soldiers, who at length, by being so much accustomed to the sight of it, lost great part of the terror they were seized with at its first appearance.”

Cryptid of the Day: Mauthe Doog

Description: It’s name means “black dog” and it’s a Hellhound seen on the Isle of Man. One account from 1744 describes the beast as “a large black spaniel with curled shaggy hair”. It is said to haunt Peel Castle, where it has been seen in almost every room. It was last seen in 1931.

In the folklore of the Isle of Man, the Moddey Dhoo is a phantom hound that haunts Peel Castle on the west coast of the island. It is known by several other names, including Mauthe Doog.

It is described as a huge spaniel covered in shaggy black hair. In 1731, topogropher George Waldron described how the Moddey Dhoo roamed the castle, being particularly fond of the guard chamber. It would lie down in front of the fire, and soon, the soldiers lost their fear of it. It has been sighted numerous times since then, in several different parts of the island.

I'm doing a Sacred Stones randomizer that I'm taking a break on. In my playthrough, Eirika is a mauthe doog. But if I ever do a comic based on the randomizer, I would make her some kind of wolf shapeshifter who fights in beast form. The top pic is her human form. The bottom picture is her wolf form. I can't imagine Eirika as an orange-haired green wolf, so I drew her as a cyan-haied cream wolf with her mane in the same style as her human hair. She's really fast and accurate, but hoo-boy does her defense and resistance suck. At least she's got hell fang to back her up. Hopefully, she doesn't suck by endgame. I'm on chapter 9 by the way and I'm playing both Eirika and Ephraim's adventures on two different save files. The sprites on the pictures are from FE Planet.
