I went with some friends to the Isle of Man!

It was a great visit, loads of really interesting history and museums and castles!

(Also loads of GORGEOUS scenery but that will be in the next post)

It's interesting how in the UK we talk about the viking age ending in 1066 with Hardrada but here they are talking about "viking kings" dating to the 1200s!

Well worth a visit!

A mysterious hound who once haunted the soldiers of Peel Castle nightly. Despite having grown used to its presence, the soldiers could sense the danger it posed. That is until the night one guard's wits were clouded by drunkenness.

While the horrors the guard witnessed remain unknown, the hound's favored passage was sealed, so that the beast would never have the opportunity to do it again.

Peel Castle, Isle of Man

An Irish monastery was originally built on the site and it is widely held that its monks were the first to bring Christianity to the Isle of Man. The castle itself was built in the 11th century by Vikings from Norway on the orders of King Magnus Barefoot . He conquered the Kingdom of the Isles and the Norse city-state of Dublin and incorporated Peel into his realms, building the castle to secure his rule in the region. The castle was originally a wooden fort and the present stone castle was constructed over a period of centuries by the local Anglo-Norman lords.
