From the artist: The Moddey Dhoo is a phantom black hound of the Manx folklore that reputedly haunted Peel Castle on the west coast of the Isle of Man. This black dog is described as big as a calf, with long shaggy hair and with eyes like pewter plates.

winter walk in the fairy glen

decided to take Chance, Minty, Nublet and Nina for a stroll through the Summerhill Glen this afternoon

Minty and Chance got a bit close to a split in the banquet table, but luckily Nublet was there to push them back!

met this mermaid and enjoyed a bit of a cuddle (and a clamber!)

Chance was convinced he heard something fun behind that grate, but it was dark and mucky so I didn't let him get too close!

I offered them a ride in my handbag but they insisted on climbing the stairs by themselves!

these two miscreants tried to break into an off-limits area, but Nublet got them back on track!

The beast snarled and growled.

Red eyes piercing, keeping you frozen in place.

Fear making your breath laboured.

Your heart barely keeping up with its own rhythm.

You made the fatal mistake to stumble backwards.

Those red eyes were the last thing you saw.

After many failed Inktobers, I decided to stop trying to follow prompt lists that always end up boring me, so I'm challenging myself to draw a cryptid per day for all the month of October!

No lists, no prompts, just me drawing random creatures I like!

A mysterious hound who once haunted the soldiers of Peel Castle nightly. Despite having grown used to its presence, the soldiers could sense the danger it posed. That is until the night one guard's wits were clouded by drunkenness.

While the horrors the guard witnessed remain unknown, the hound's favored passage was sealed, so that the beast would never have the opportunity to do it again.

Despite being sick as a dog (heh), Bones still drew me this GORGEOUS piece. Its so perfect I nearly died.

English poet and topographer George Waldron documented the Moddey Dhoo (or Mauthe Doog) in his book History and Description of the Isle of Man published in 1744. Waldron wrote: “They say that an apparition called, in their language, the Mauthe Doog, in the shape of a large black spaniel with curled shaggy hair, was used to haunt Peel Castle; and has been frequently seen in every room, but particularly in the guard-chamber, where, as soon as candles were lighted, it came and lay down before the fire in presence of all the soldiers, who at length, by being so much accustomed to the sight of it, lost great part of the terror they were seized with at its first appearance.”

In the folklore of the Isle of Man, the Moddey Dhoo is a phantom hound that haunts Peel Castle on the west coast of the island. It is known by several other names, including Mauthe Doog.

It is described as a huge spaniel covered in shaggy black hair. In 1731, topogropher George Waldron described how the Moddey Dhoo roamed the castle, being particularly fond of the guard chamber. It would lie down in front of the fire, and soon, the soldiers lost their fear of it. It has been sighted numerous times since then, in several different parts of the island.
