Ah, Japanese indie pop. I don't own a lot (shipping!!) but what I do own, I love. I actually don't own any physical releases from The Caraway (Tokyo, Japan) but I've been enjoying their Glaswegian-styled pop for the past several years.

I remember hovering my mouse over the "Add To Cart" button on Bandcamp for their LP "The Selection of The Caraway" but never following through (darn those shipping costs on the blue-very label). Now, we have a 2-song 7" reworking of two recent songs - "Birthday Girl" and "I Love Your Tears". "Birthday Girl" would make Teenage Fanclub blush with jealousy and "I Love Your Tears" sounds more like Duglas Stewart/BMX Bandits styled pop.

Currently, only 8 Bandcampers have bought this, but three are heavy hitters: Frischluft! Tonträger, Raffaele Melina, and Mawkish Twaddler. And, please note today is the day I discovered and followed Bandcamp user Jack McHale - also bought The Caraway and we have 99 items in common.

10/26/23.

Thanks to Mawkish Twaddler for buying this - it appeared in my feed because of their purchase. I'd never heard of PO! (Leicester, England), but they fit nicely into my recent listening to The Motifs.

Po! are more of a rock band than The Motifs, and they have an indie pop sound that reminds me of The Aislers Set, and the jangle sounds a bit Smiths-ish in spots.

Ruth Miller created her own label (Rutland Records) and took out a loan to release the work of PO!

2/27/23.

I'm not really sure how I ended up at Vanity Mirror's (Toronto/Los Angeles) "Puff", but I do remember seeing that it already had received the Mawkish Twaddler seal of approval.

While it's the only song available, "Tuesday's News" definitely combines a West Coast pop feel with English 1960s pop. Think of The Beatles or The Kinks combined with Emmit Rhodes, Olivia Tremor Control and Belle and Sebastian (those last three comps come courtesy of the Vanity Mirror Bandcamp page).

"Puff" is being released by We Are Busy Bodies (also based in Toronto, Ontario). This label is releasing the new Bug Club LP.

2/6/21.

I learned about Josephine & Hershguy “Stocky Tunes” because I follow Mawkish Twaddler on Bandcamp.  His tastes are extremely close to mine, so I when i saw that he had recently purchased this i gave it a listen (despite my misgivings about the band name). 

While there is only one song right now, there is a lot to hear.  The guitar has tones of both Queen, Thin Lizzy and Sparks.  The glam-sound also recalls The Lemon Twigs. 

This is being released by DIG! Records in Leesburg, Virginia.  This labels first release was a reissue of The Strand “Seconds Waiting”.  The first song on this release, “You and Me” is on Captured Tracks’ amazing “Strum & Thrum” compilation.

2/26/25.

My snooping techniques have evolved greatly over time. If I snooped in 2021 like I do now, I would have posted The Aerosols 4 years ago. The fact that both Mawkish Twaddler and Paisley Shirt Records bought this would have meant that I would have seen it on my Bandcamp feed. That didn't happen, and I "discovered" this release via the tried and true "stumbling" method of snooping.

The Aerosols are a San Francisco band that certainly don't fall into the "fog pop" genre that the city has become associated with. Their sound is a brighter, poppier jangle more reminiscent of Chime School or The Umbrellas.

But really, the band I kept thinking of as I listened to this over and over was Game Theory - listen to those Scott Milleresque vocals and melodies.

"Room For Wrong" looks to be self-released. You can do a twofer for only $20. The Aerosols are still together, but the responsibilities of adulthood (read: a child) have slowed down their output in recent years.

I was surfing through the "surprise me" feature on Bandcamp today, and after some time, came across Chicago-based power pop/indie pop band Mammals. I always check out who has bought it before to see if any of the people I followed discovered this long before me. I was not surprised to see that Mawkish Twaddler beat me to this find.

Sometimes I'm embarrassed by my affinity for the band comparisons. So, I love it when I get a break and a band provides their own RIYL list. In this case Mammals list: The Nerves, The Jam, Ramones, Buddy Holly, Reigning Sound, The Plimsouls, The Kinks, Buzzcocks, and Royal Headache as inspirations.

"Look Around You" is one of 3 7"s released by the band between 2017 and 2020. This appears to be self released.
