I’m watching season 3 of parenthood rn and am literally yelling at the screen because of how terrible Max’s parents are. When your autistic kid is having a breakdown about a consequence that he earned by literally assaulting his younger cousin for no reason, YOU DONT TELL HIM THAT HES RIGHT TO BE ANGRY OR THAT ITS UNFAIR. HES NOT. ITS NOT. MAX’S BEHAVIOUR MAKES SENSE BUT THAT DOESNT MAKE IT OK. HE NEEDS DISCIPLINE, ESPECIALLY WHEN HE HURTS OTHER CHILDREN. Ugh the way Max’s character in general is handled pisses me off so much, he’s never taught any social skills, WHICH HE NEEDS. His parents just expect everyone else to deal with his shitty behaviour for the rest of his life

Okay so I just found this article that made me galaxy brain and it is about how ASD is used as a gimmick in shows and I’m going to reblog with a link so it shows up in the tags. It talks about how they use the savant with “quirky” characteristics as a plot device and fetishises a real disorder, and it mentions examples of characters as well (I will be tagging those mentioned)! Also, it was posted in 2014 and yet still carries on to today. 

I also want to give a tw for a brief mention of Benedict Cumberbatch for those that are uncomfortable/triggered/etc. with his ableist comments he made in the past.

Ti (Introverted Thinking)- Max desires to understand the world in a logical sense. He is also always honest about what he thinks even if it hurts others. He tells Kristina during her campaign “I can’t support your campaign until I conduct more research.”

Ne (Extroverted Intuition)- He constantly goes on and on about theories that interest him, in which none of his family members follow as they’re all sensors. 

Si (Introverted Sensing)- Despite being idealistic, he is observant and pays close attention to details. He certainly stores data and facts in his brain for future reference of it later.

Fe (Extroverted Feeling)- This being his inferior trait has a lot to do with his ASD. He is socially awkward and can’t read the emotions of others. “Aspergers is suppose to make me smart but why don’t I understand why they’re laughing at me?” 

Note: Haddie was the worst character by far but I’m pretty sure she is ESTJ. She is blunt, realistic, a planner, and hides her feelings. Both ESFJ’s (Adam and Kristina) made an opposite functioned child, Max (INTP).
