NYFWM 2016 Throwback

At one show onlookers noted that all the models looked about 12. During the last few seasons, teens, some models were still battling bouts of acne and/or braces.  Now the youth quake, sometimes stealing the silver fox locks, stands alongside the need readers set.

Hermann and Krammer & Stoudt both featured full-fledged grey haired humans.  The 58 year old designer of Hermann and Krammer, David Rubin says he wanted to appeal to a broader client base.  He casted people he meets in real life alongside models. One was a Lower East Side dealer at vintage trade shows, another a textile designer at the School of Visual Arts.  Designer Minn Hur of HVRMINN featured a mature model too and says his collection, which balances military looks with tailoring, is not defined by age or race.

Comfort Dressing is the New Comfort Eating Uncuffed pants, spa-like robe coats at Garciavelez, for those who skipped their inclement weather workouts and sought comfort carbs during winter storms, layers of loose dressing topped off by ponchos will alleviate winter swing weight gain ill fashion effects.

Feel Bad About Your Neck? Designers were channeling Nora Ephron as they fashioned ways to discreetly burrow any signs of aging. Need to wait for Botox until global trading losses don't portend a recession? In the meantime, try turtlenecks, shown at a number of menswear shows such as David Hart and Robert Geller. This look along with scarfs draping the neckwear is a look you can rock alongside millennial.

Year of the Dandy White ties paired with white shirt and white gloves, flashback to 70s punk rock safety pins, silver rings and bracelets, as well as, major silver biker chains attached to pants.  In a nod to the election year, a U.S. flag was draped over a coat at Joseph Abboud.  Flowers also adorned jackets.  Next Valentine's Day, men may just get pinned, as there are many pendants being shown and major silver jewelry comeback.  You may just need to buy your own jewelry box as there are many baubles to finish the look for FW16. For a more polished presentation, nab a serious work worthy briefcase shown at Robert Geller.

Layering & Texture Are Two Top Trends For an edgier look try a cropped jacket or sweater over a tailored one.  It’s a thing. You can now rock a look reminiscent of thermal underwear, which resurfaced as textured leggings.

Substantial Coats Board meeting ready, merger meeting worthy, luxury standouts abound.

Shoes for Formal Occasions Johnston & Johnston, 165 year old brand renowned for their quality footwear, was viewed as the shoemakers of older bankers according to some of the millennial crowd.  The new limited edition formal wear classic Americana collab with designer David Hart will appeal to taste makers of all ages with edgier alternatives such as patent leather and velvet smoking options. They still make comfortable shoes for every day wear and have updated ankle boots replete with standout red laces. There will be multiple choices for footwear FW16 as numerous designers showed rugged boots with studs or more relaxed footwear.

Color - Red Pops Up As a sweater, a neckerchief, a pendant, a hat, this color can be used as a strong accent to a black and white or gray ensembles. Perry Ellis showed red sweaters and jackets as did emerging brand Matiere Collection..  Other designers like Nautica showed a more discreet option - a classic navy stripe sweater with a ribbon of red running through it, and also his signature classic red sweaters.

Hats Off to Grown Ups The tiny ubiquitous hat that looks like it shrunk in the dryer and is fit for a toddler are being replaced by wide brimmed versions at Public School, Carlos Campos and many others.  For those that own their own business, or on the campaign trail in Vermont, a more casual beanie in a cornflower blue can cover tresses.

Comeback Kids Potential fashion potholes for those with a bit of a paunch?  Vests, double or single breasted, can cause a little bit of trouble if you have a potbelly. My grandpa could rock one well until his 80s, because he was a skinny minny.  Double-breasted tailoring also making a style comeback, which many men prefer during comfort food season over the slim single-breasted look. At Joseph Abboud, herringbone hails a retro look which may hard to pull off depending on your pallor and hair hue.  Max 'N Chester brought back pinstripes in looks for men and women.

Tides Are Turning There is a definite shift from an overtly feminine look of SS16 to a range of choices which bring back a more formal look overall for men from hats to coats to suits and all the flourishes that pull the looks together
