Cancun marks the entry point to a historic area known as the Mayan World or Mundo Maya. The ruins of El Rey, located right in the heart of Cancun, are all that remains of an ancient Mayan city, deserted after the Spanish settlers arrived. Many of the stone walls are still adorned with antique paintings. Even though the murals have deteriorated over time, pictures of kings and other important members of the community can still be made out.
