Women in Mahabharata - Mayavati

She is considered to be the reincarnation of Rati, Kama's wife. In her human form, she is married to Shambara.

When Shambara kidnaps Krishna's son Pradyumna, she raises him herself, separate from the other children of Shambara, teaching him all the martial secrets of the danavas. This is something that serves Pradyumna in nearly every war that he has to fight.

When Pradyumna grows up, she guides him through killing Shambara, and marries him after Shambara's death. She is accepted by Rukmini as her daughter-in-law after Narada vouches for her and Pradyumna's relationship.

Although I had never envisioned marriage, I had thought of love. Not the furtive love I heard muffled in the corners or rooms of some of the harem wives. What I wanted was a connection, a shared heartbeat that kept rhythm across oceans and worlds. Not some alliance cobbled out of war. I didn’t want the prince from the folktales or some milk-skinned, honey-eyed youth who said his greetings and proclaimed his love in the same breath. I wanted a love thick with time, as inscrutable as if a lathe had carved it from night and as familiar as the marrow in my bones. I wanted the impossible, which made it that much easier to push out of my mind.

Mayavati, reincarnation of Rati, goddess of love, and wife of Pradyumna. Pradyumna is cast into the sea as a child but swallowed by a fish and later rescued by a fisherman. His wife decides to raise the child to manhood, when he learns that in another life, they were the god and goddess of love. To have the woman who raised him become his wife is the course of fate, but like so much in Pradyumna’s life, it is like light reflecting off a broken mirror, gone askew.
