Waking up somewhere unfamiliar- Lumina
Fish Out of Water Masterlist
When she opened her eyes, it was jarring. She was clearly in a hospital room. But it wasn’t… normal. The Company medical bay had white walls, white floors, white equipment, everything uniform, everything had its place. The heroes’ clinic the trio had been bringing her to was very much the same. They weren’t as uniform, a splash of colors here and there, like art on the walls and fake plants in corners and on counters.
Here… it felt… Alive? Like a home.
The curtains near her bed were baby blue. The sheets and blankets covering her had a soft green and white swirling pattern on them. The walls and floor were a matching soft yellow color, with a trim of daisies stretching from the floor up into the middle of the walls. An open window in the wall to her left let in the smell of the ocean with a gentle breeze on her face. It was a beautiful view of the shoreline, too.
Even her clothing was different. Usually she was put into a hospital gown. Something that always made her feel strange. Too vulnerable. Here she had a soft button-down t-shirt on. And she could feel pants of the same material on her under the blankets.
The only thing she really recognized was the equipment surrounding her and the fact that the bed she lay in was a hospital one.
She startled as the door opened, her hands twisting into the blankets.
A young woman, maybe around her age, came in. She looked at Lumina with surprise before giving her a watm and bright smile. “Oh good, you’re awake!”
Lumina’s eyes darted to the door and back to the woman. She couldn’t see any of the trio behind her. Or hear any of them.
Vague memories came back to her. The pier. Jumping into the water. Blood on the sand. Her baby sister’s voice…
“I’m dead, aren’t I?” she croaked, clenching the blankets tighter. It was the only way this made sense. She had to be. They’d probably let her family in to say last goodbyes. And the trio wasn’t here. So she must be dead.
Emotions flickered across the woman’s face. Pain, sadness, something else Lumina couldn’t place. Finally, she walked over, taking Lumina’s hand softly in both of hers. Her fingers were slightly rough against Lumina’s palm, work-worn.
“No,” she said, her brown eyes a reminder of someone else’s. “You’re not dead, Lumina. You’re at Rosethorn Hospital. We made sure to keep you alive, so,” Her hand was squeezed gently and firmly as the woman smiled at her again. “let’s make sure you stay that way, alright?”
Well, Lumina certainly couldn’t argue when this stranger felt real enough. So she nodded, asking quietly, “So… who are you then? A nurse?”
“In a way.” the woman answered, letting go of Lumina’s hand to take a seat on the chair beside her. “My name is Kallie. I’m a caretaker for patients who need some extra help getting back on their feet. And,” Her lips quirked, again reminding Lumina of someone else. “I’m Darius’ sister. Twin sister, actually. I assume you remember my brother well enough.”
