Good, that’s good. That’s…

No, that’s not good. That’s bad. That’s a big emergency.

He’s going to get caught. He’s going to get found out. They’ll check his pulse and find it missing. They’ll wonder why he isn’t suffocating as blood fills his lungs. He’ll get caught and then it won’t matter whether or not he dies. He’ll lose Shane nevertheless.

Shane can’t have heard that right. How many pucks to the head has this guy taken?

“You think Ilya left a woman in Montreal named Jane, for me?” Shane asks.

“I don’t see what else happened!” Marlow whisper-shouts. “And he really loved Jane, you know? He wouldn’t tell any of us but we could tell. So you better be treating him right, Hollander!”

Shane is going to explode.

“Marlow,” he says quietly. “Say the two names together.”

“Which two names?” Marlow asks.

“Shane and Jane.”

Maybe that’s arrogant to think. He’s probably overthinking his own importance.

The rest of the walk is great. They talk a lot. Shane describes what it’s like growing up with a parent who’s a dog breeder. Rose talks about moving from Michigan to Ontario when she was ten. 

“You have no idea how long it took me to figure out temperature,” she jokes.

Shane laughs. “Celsius makes more sense!”

“Well now I know that! But try explaining to four kids why thirty-two went from freezing to scorching!”

It’s just easy, talking to her. Shane wants to keep doing it. But as they walk off the trail, back to their parked cars, he knows he owes her the truth. Otherwise, how can he hope to be her friend?

May tilts her head up to look at him. Her eyes are wide with astonishment. 

For a moment, Ravi thinks he’s going to regret having said anything. It’s too soon. It’s too early. She has too much going on. He should have waited…

“I’m falling in love with you, too,” she says.

Oh!

Oh, well scratch that. He’s very glad he spoke up. Super glad.

“Really?” He asks, grinning.

“Really,” she insists.

I have taken many breaks today. I went to winners and bought new glassware for my new house

mayvi as camp counselors? maybe them catching up by the fire after their campers go to bed. or whatever else.

hi!! there's a little bit of everything in here!

1. May and Ravi have been working at the same camp for a couple of years. It’s a free camp for kids with cancer — Ravi used to be a camper, and May got involved through someone at her church. They have a couple fundraisers outside of camp season, so May and Ravi see each other a couple times a year. It’s cool because it’s totally funded through donations, the counsellors get paid, and the kids get to come for free. It’s a hint of normalcy for the families.

2. May is 19 when she starts working at the camp and meets Ravi for the first time. He’s 20, and he’s been working at the camp since he was 16. The kids absolutely love him. It’s a little overwhelming for May at first, because she’s not used to cousins, even, and this is a LOT of kids. She gets paired up with Ravi and his group of kids, and by the end of the week she feels a lot more comfortable. They have one day off where the camp gets cleaned and there’s no kids, and the counsellors go into a nearby town for a meal they don’t have to cook. One of the older guys drives the camp van and they all pile into it, and May gets squeezed in the back between Ravi and another counsellor, and and tries not to notice how Ravi’s leg presses up against hers every time the van hits a bump or pothole.

3. The second year May is at the camp, Ravi is 21 and unofficially nominated the staffer to go to the liquor store for the day in between campers. May hands him a twenty when he leaves, and blushes when he presses the change into her hand when he gets back and hands her a couple of vodka coolers. It’s not May’s first time drinking, but it is the first time she can drink without the spectre of her mother, aka Sergeant Grant, hovering over her. (Athena was okay with her drinking at the house — her theory was better at home than unsupervised — but May never felt comfortable drinking that much.) Ravi keeps handing her cups of water between coolers, and it’s probably the only reason she wakes up feeling okay. She apologizes to him the next day, and he says there’s nothing to apologize for, smiles, and makes sure she’s feeling okay.

4. The third year May is at camp, she can join Ravi on his liquor store runs. There’s a local ice cream store at the edge of town, and they always stop on their way back to camp. They sit in the open trunk of the van and eat their ice cream cones together, talk about their lives outside of camp, activities for the upcoming week, books they’ve read, anything at all. They take turns playing DJ on the old radio that had what is definitely an aftermarket iphone hookup. Ravi generally plays more mellow stuff, but has a lot of early 2000s pop-punk that he likes to play if they’ve had a tough group. May’s playlists are more eclectic and influenced a lot by her parents and her friends from school, so they’ll swap from a popular 70s song to something that was released in the last month. When they have a bracelet making station the last week of camp, May makes one for Ravi out of his favourite colours and ties it around his wrist for him, telling herself it’s just her imagination that Ravi’s pulse seems to jump under her fingers.

5. The fourth year, they both get paired with new counsellors and they don’t get to see each other as much during the week. Someone volunteers to take May’s place for the liquor store runs, and Ravi politely says no thanks, and May ducks her head and hides her grin. The weather is nice this year, and they’re able to have more campfires with less fire risk, but the older counsellors still make sure there’s more water buckets than needed, just in case. When the kids head off to bed, the counsellors stay at the fire to talk and hang out, and more often than not, Ravi will find a reason to move closer to May. Not always right next to her, but closer. The first week they go into town, May realizes that the bracelet she’d made Ravi is tied around his keys. He notices her looking and tells her that it had eventually fallen off, but luckily at home so he didn’t lose it. After they finish their ice cream cones, May takes a chance and kisses him while he’s still sitting on the edge of the van trunk, and their first kiss tastes like mint chocolate and pistachio.

She runs into him at the wake. Runs into him literally, with her little cup of punch and her plate of canapes balanced on top of it. There’s a napkin clutched in her other hand which she’d picked up to sort of use as a tissue and also to sort of use as just a napkin because she hasn’t been able to make herself cry yet.

here’s a little mayravi coffee shop meet cute.

May’s got one AirPod in, noise from the coffee shop she’s currently sitting in mostly drowning out her playlist, but she doesn’t mind. The chatter is comforting in a way. It drowns out her thoughts and lets her fade into the background.

She’s texting Lydia, one of the other girls in her study group. They’re all supposed to meet up after class later tonight, but Lydia is sick and won’t be making it. May’s typing out an offer to fill her in on what she misses when she hears a booming voice call out, "Iced hazelnut latte with oat milk!”

“Oh!” May gasps a little, wondering how long she had been spaced out that she didn’t hear the barista call her name. She pushes past people until she reaches the counter and spots her drink; May can feel herself already lighting up at the sight of her iced coffee.

A stranger’s hand is wrapping around the cup at the same time, their fingers slightly overlapping each other and that’s what makes May jolt. She looks up: there’s a tall handsome young man to her left with his arm outstretched, and it’s his hand that’s holding her drink.

“I’m sorry,” May smiles politely at him, “but this one’s mine. I heard them call it.”

“Iced hazelnut latte with oatmilk?” he asks, his voice pleasantly scratchy in an I-just-woke-up way.

May nods, still staring. She tightens her grip on the cup. It doesn’t matter how cute he is with his deep brown skin and eyes, his messy curls and stubble, this is her coffee.

“Yeah, that’s what I ordered.”

What?

“Well…” May’s eyebrows furrow. “I ordered the same thing, so whose is this?”

“It’s his,” an agitated-sounding voice chimes in. May and her adversary both turn to the barista, who is pointing at the cute stranger, “he was before you in line. We’re still working on yours.”

Mortification creeps hot and fast all the way from the top of May’s head down to her toes. She releases her grip on the coffee and pulls her hand away, their fingers brushing again as she does.

“Oh - oh my god, I’m so sorry,” she apologizes profusely, wanting to disappear forever. How could she be so stupid?

I can never come back here again. I’ll have to redo my entire route.

“It’s fine.” His eyes crinkle a bit when he smiles and even his teeth are pretty. May can definitely never come back to this shop. “I’m not mad about getting good coffee and meeting a pretty girl first thing in the morning.”

Huh? May looks down at herself: sneakers, baggy jeans, and a crop top make up her outfit for the day. Her hair is in a bun and she doesn’t have makeup on. Her tote bag is bulky and cumbersome thanks to a textbook, two notebooks, and her laptop all fighting for space.

She can feel her face scrunching as if to ask, Are you sure?

“What’s your name?” he asks.

“I’m May.”

“Nice to meet you May, I’m Ravi.”

This time when he smiles at her, May returns it, curiosity sparking something deep within her.

It's family game night. The 118 firefighters, plus dispatchers Maddie and May, are at the house that should have been Bobby and Athena's together. Now it was just Buck's. And Athena? She was suspiciously absent. The room is filled with loud cheer, animosity a thing of the past when there's popcorn able to be thrown.

The Jenga is set up and it's May's turn to play.

She rolls her shoulders, preparing. May blushes as she feels that Ravi's got his eyes on her. "Stop staring at me to distract me!" She insists, her brown eyes flashing over at him.

"Oh I assure you," Ravi states so smoothly that May thinks she might actually have to die now. "I'm not staring at you to distract you. There are other reasons one would stare at someone as beautiful as you, May Grant-Nash."

Then the landlord slash firefighter has the audacity to wink at her! She can feel herself redden, blush down to her toes, so she closes her eyes and prays for strength. The name change had gone through post-mortem. Bobby himself had never gotten the chance to call her a Grant-Nash. But he had signed the papers to make it happen before he died — something May was still thankful for today.

The room had gotten quiet.

Too quiet.

May opened her eyes, only to see literally everyone present (excepting only Ravi, Chris and Denny) staring at her with varous stages of "are you gonna do anything about that?" written all over their faces. (Denny and Chris probably would have been staring too, if they weren't playing video games.)

Ravi was looking directly at her.

Only his face wasn't mischievous. It wasn't playful. The look on his face said… everything he was afraid to say. The small smile, the twinkle in his eyes. And yet somehow, without a word being spoken, May understood. She knew exactly what he wanted to say.

The room seems to hold its breath as she leans forward. "I'm still gonna destroy you at Jenga, Ravi Panikkar." Her voice is a sultry threat. One that should come with warning signs, blaring sirens of its own.

And just like that, everyone is laughing again.

This can't be easy for him. Bobby is entirely aware of that. He must feel terrible. He must not know what to believe. Bobby doesn't envy his position today, even if he has occasionally dreamed of being able to magically snap his fingers and change some of the harder parts of his life in his own brain. 

Buck's face is still very red. He looks like he's about ready to explode. There's an icy quality to his eyes that Bobby hadn't seen in years, even before he died. It's the one that warned Bobby that Buck was so upset and overwhelmed about something he was about to act recklessly, consequences be damned. Like the warning snarl before a dog bites.

“Buck,” Bobby says gently. “What's on your mind?”

Buck's eyes dart between the door into the house, and then back to Bobby.

“Nothing," he lies. “You guys do whatever you want, I need to take a walk.”

The kid was named after him after all. Maybe it's good for them to get to know each other.

“There's nothing harder in the world than losing a child,” Bobby says. “But most people don't get them back. Your mom and dad are going to be so happy.”

Nash gives him a big, baby-toothed smile. It's striking. It reminds Bobby of both Maddie and Chim, all wrapped into one. It's an expression he hasn't seen from either of them since he's been back. He has a feeling it'll return to them soon.

“That's a very nice smile,” Bobby tells him. 

Nash babbles a little, mostly incoherently. He tries to repeat the word. Smile. It comes out sounding more like mile.

Theo is struggling to keep still. He keeps moving and fidgeting in the chair, and the chair makes noise against the ground, and the noise that the chair makes against the ground is pretty sharp. He keeps asking what different equipment is. He doesn't know any of it. It's all new to him and scary, because he knows it's really important to keep Dad healthy.  And Dad always says if he doesn't understand something he can always ask. 

But Theo might be asking too much. He finds that he can't stop moving his mouth. He can't stop speaking. He's filling all the uncomfortable silence and nervousness in the room with the sound of his own voice, asking a million questions. That and the squeaking of his chair. It's too much. He can feel that it's too much, before anyone even has to tell him. 

The longer it goes on, the more Dad seems to grow tired of him. Usually, Dad is the person that never gets tired of him. Dad never seems to feel like he's too much.

Hen smiles. “I get it. But I think the best thing to do in any relationship, especially when you're going through something, is to talk about it with your partner. Take it as somebody who's made that mistake before, you don't want to wait until you've caused a problem you can't undo.”

Ravi swallows. Hen's been in a marriage for a long time. She has a beautiful family. She's happy. He should listen to her. 

“Thanks, Hen,” Ravi says. “That's really good advice.”

“I try my best,” she says. “I'm glad you came to me with this.”

 Ravi winces. “Yeah, my mistake was ever trying to discuss it with Buck and Eddie.”

He’s not suffering from the bleeding. He isn’t choking or sputtering. It’s just hard to speak clearly. No one understands his protestations.

“Just say as still as possible, Mr. Rozanov,” one of the medics says. “We don’t want to do any additional damage.”

“Please…” He tries weakly. “No…”

He’s cut off by an impossible sound.

“ILYA!” 

Shane’s voice. Shane’s broken, frantic voice.

But that’s not possible. Shane isn’t here. Shane is safe in Montreal. He’s with Hayden and his parents. He isn’t here where he could be hurt. He isn’t here where he could watch Ilya die.

Ravi turns to look at her. He would have been embarrassed about this until pretty recently. He would have felt like he didn’t have any sort of right to display his grief so clearly in front of her. He knows her better than that now. She likes having a reason to talk about him now that some time has passed. She likes knowing other people are thinking about him, too.

“It is,” Ravi says. “Really feels like him.”

She nods. “It does.”

Ravi gives the photo one last look. He feels Bobby’s eyes on him, although that isn’t possible. From out on the balcony, her hears a warm trill of May’s laughter. 

Time to be brave.

Ravi turns back towards Athena. “Can I ask you something?”

Theo spent a lof of time with Aunt Maddie or Aunt Karen. 

Things are getting better, though, so now Dad can. Which means it’s just the two of them.

Theo is sort of nervous. He wants it to go well. He wants Dad to keep being able to watch him. He doesn’t want to be too much.

After Eddie leaves for work, Dad makes Theo breakfast. Pancakes. Dad used to make pancakes all the time. It’s been a while, though. Because of the burns. Obviously. Eddie tries, but he’s not as good.

“I hope these are okay,” Dad says as he serves Theo a plate. “I’m a little rusty.”

Theo looks Dad over. He doesn’t see any rust. Can people get rust on them?

Ravi feels like he might cry. “Thank you, Athena. I know mine did.”

“Well, good,” she says, clapping her hands together. “This is very exciting. When can I expect this to happen? If you have a date in mind, I’ll make an excuse to take her out to get her nails done.”

Ravi laughs. “I’m sure she’ll appreciate that. Uh, I have a place booked up the coast two weekends from now. Just a quick surprise trip. I was hoping to ask then.”

“That’s wonderful,” Athena replies. “She’ll be thrilled.”

“You think?” Ravi asks.

Athena gives him a knowing wink. “Oh, I have a strong feeling.”

Wow, this really could not have gone better.

Ravi can’t think of anything else to say. He’s certain he won’t be able to stop smiling all night.

“I’m going to head back out there, so she doesn’t get suspicious,” Athena winks. 

Ravi nods. “I’ll finish up here in a sec.” 

“We’ll save you a glass,” Athena says, nodding at the wine bottle, before picking it back up, and heading out of the kitchen, towards her children.

Ravi lets out a deep, contented sigh. He turns around to finish up with the dishes. As he does, his eyes land back on the photo of Bobby. He smiles at it, like somehow Bobby can see him, too.

He doesn’t feel guilty or undeserving anymore; he just feels grateful.

“Your pancakes  are always the best,” Theo reminds him.

Dad smiles. “Thanks, kiddo.”

Theo eats his pancakes. Just as expected, they’re great. Theo especially likes the blueberries inside them. He lies how mushy and sour they are.

“So,” Dad says as Theo finishes his food. “I thought maybe you and I could talk today.” 

“About what?” Theo asks.

Dad looks sort of nervous. Theo doesn’t know what to expect.

“Well,” Dad says, “I know it’s been a really hard few months.”

Theo nods. “Because you’re hurt.”

Dad nods. “Yeah. Because of that. But you have been so patient and great, and I know that hasn’t been easy for you, buddy.”

Theo doesn’t feel like he’s been great. He looks at his plate, avoiding Dad’s eyes.

“And I know I’ve been…”  Dad puffs out a breath. “Well I know I haven’t been myself, and that must be really confusing. I’m sorry.”

“That’s okay, Dad,” Theo says quietly.

It has been really confusing. He’s still confused.
