Donald Trump will almost certainly avoid jail time for his tax fraud, but if he is convicted, Democrats need to be prepared for the fact that he’s not gonna become less popular for it.
This won’t be the straw that breaks the camel’s back. His supporters and half of Congress said they were okay with him attempting a fascist coup, they’re not gonna look at him and say that tax fraud is a bridge too far. They’ll call it a hoax and a witchhunt, they’ll crowdfund his legal fees (which he will launder and pocket), they’ll support him more than ever if he gets locked up. He’ll become their Nelson Mandela (though Trump probably supported the apartheid government). He’ll become a martyr of what they perceive as a broken justice system, there will be petitions to Free Donald, Republicans will try to overturn the charges and have them expunged, he’ll go down as a conservative folk hero, not for some blue collar cause, but for lying about how rich he was so he wouldn’t have to be less rich.
If by some miracle he is convicted and sentenced to jail, he’ll get a measly slap on the wrist. A year max, of which he’ll serve two or three months then be released on house arrest after faking an illness; he’ll “serve” most of his sentence at Mar a Lago, surrounded by secret service, costing taxpayers millions. When he’s “released,” he’ll act all heroic and brave; he’ll bleach his hair to make it look like he endured years of stress, he’ll walk with a cane for a while before “miraculously recovering” through force of will to show how manly and red-blooded American he is. Everything is staged, everything is a show, it’s all about appearances and manipulating the narrative to make him look like a god to his followers.
If he goes to jail, it’ll boost his brand and help his kids run for office. There’s almost no downside unless he got shivved to death (which would never happen because he wouldn’t be in general population with other inmates, he’d have a special suite all for himself because he has secret service protection for the rest of his life).
He will never face substantive consequences for anything. His cult won’t allow it.
There is no justice in this country.
The Supreme Court cleared the way for New York prosecutors to obtain eight years of financial records from the accountants and bankers of former President Trump.
Back in 2019, in the course of criminal investigation, New York prosecutors served a subpoena on Trump’s personal accounting firm, Mazars USA, LLP, seeking financial records relating to Trump and the Trump Organization. Trump sued, demanding that the federal district court quash the subpoena on the ground that a sitting president is immune to criminal prosecution. He lost.
Trump appealed to the Second Circuit. He lost again.
Trump demanded review before the United States Supreme Court. He lost yet again.
Trump then filed a second lawsuit in federal district court objecting to the subpoena on new grounds, claiming it was politically motivated. He lost.
Trump again appealed to the Second Circuit. He lost again.
Trump again demanded review before the U.S. Supreme Court. And he just lost yet again.
Appeals court rejects claim subpoenas lacked legislative point
When Congress issued a subpoena to Mazars USA for some of Trump’s financial records, Trump immediately challenged it in court. He lost, because the subpoena is well within the scope of Congress’s extremely broad investigatory power. He immediately appealed, and he just lost again. Presumably he’s now teeing up his demand that his loyal appointees on the U.S. Supreme Court intervene to keep his financial information from Congress.
Prudence !
Stéphane Mazars le nouveau Maire de Rodez est un homme prudent. A la tête de trente-cinq élus, il n’oublie pas que sept, dont le Maire sortant, plus deux « citoyens » sont des opposants. Cela s’est…
