For Murderbot September day 15: Tarik

Ratthi and Tarik's relationship drama in System Collapse is... well we know very little about it, because Murderbot, protagonist that you are (so valid). But it displays an interesting cultural divide and mix-up of cultural expectations when starting a new relationship.

Matteo and Tarik have a thing, and Tarik doesn’t think it’s “like that.” But even so, on Preservation, a fundamental part of starting any sexual/romantic relationship is also being upfront about who else is in your relationship network. Who else you’re seeing, who are the people most important to you who will always be around—because starting a relationship with someone means entering their relationship network, and knowing what you’re getting into, and being honest about where you fit into it. Ratthi would expect Tarik to let him know about Matteo as part of their relationship, so he understands where he is in the world of relationships this represents.

Whereas Tarik comes from a Corporate Death Squad culture where who you’re seeing and who you’re fucking is Nobody Else’s Business. What are you a cop. (They’re all cops, but anyway.) There’s not much privacy in any part of their lives, so privacy is carefully clawed back where you can get it, and that is none of anyone else’s business.

So Ratthi feels hurt and betrayed—Tarik not telling him about his relationship with Matteo before they started their Thing feels like an act of disrespect and a violation of trust.

Whereas Tarik thinks that Ratthi expecting to be told is incredibly rude and prying and entitled. That has nothing to do with him!

(Also, giving me the image of, Tarik: okay this does explain why when I was trying to fuck you, you kept talking about your lesbian best friends first. Like I was Not sure what was up with that and did not know what you were going for there. You’re lucky you’re hot and nice)

Hi hello and welcome to this new event!

I have decided that there really aren't enough Murderbot Diaries events (there never could be) and am therefore launching this. It's a prompt event, run similarly to Whumptober, Flufftober, and other prompt events that don't take place in October!

Rules will be posted very shortly, but basically, there are three prompts for each day in September plus six alternative prompts (so that's what, 96 prompts total?). Mix and match however you feel like, and participate as much or as little as you want. Any type of fanwork is welcome, post your fill to Tumblr or AO3 during September to be shared (though you really don't have to to participate). Plus, participant and completionist badges are available!

Stay tuned for the prompts which will go up in early July, ask any questions you want, and have fun!
