Those Wings Had Taken You Up So High
Platonic!DSMP!Ph1lza x Glare!Reader
You had finished your house just a few days ago, it hadn't taken too long to build with everyone's help. Currently, you were still trying to shift from attempting to sleep at night, over to being fully nocturnal, a suggestion from Ranboo. You were slowly beginning to sleep more while the sun was up and less when it was down. You still had the rings under your eyes, but you were glad you weren't causing a bother for Techno and Phil anymore.
Speaking of the pair, Techno had run off around the time you had finished your house. Something about training in the mountains somewhere? You didn't mind. He was strong enough to take care of himself and told you to watch his animals while he was gone.
You were over at Phil’s presently, having tea as he was reorganizing his chests somewhat.
“Can you tell me more about the SMP?” “What more do you want to know mate? I've told you everything I've known about.” He said playfully as he pulled out a stack of wooden items. You pouted a bit before sipping your tea. “Well then tell me about your adventures. The stories you tell always sound so exciting.” “S’pose living in a cave is pretty dull. Fine, I have one I think you'll like.” He said, standing up fully to grab his cup.
He began to regal you with the tale of how he met Death. He spoke of her with deep admiration and got distracted with recounting her appearance. The story eventually developed to him and Death falling in love. You were hooked, to say the least. You watched as he talked with his hands, wings flexing and opening from under his cape-robe. He looked so wistful as he described flying alongside her, before trailing off. His wings folded in before he pulled his robe back into place over them.
“That was a long long time ago, however.” He retook his seat, pouring himself a bit more tea. You looked down feeling like you should say something.
“Do you miss it? Flying?” You asked awkwardly. He chuckled, the happy sorrow of it stinging. “More than I can describe.” “What was it like?” He took a deep breath, leaning back as he looked at the ceiling. “It felt...” He waved a hand, trying to put words to an emotion he couldn't fully describe. “Free. Like I could reach up and touch the very sky with my own two hands. Paint the horizon and awaken the stars. The clouds and birds were the only things that could touch me up there.”
He lowered the hand, sighing. “I was more than I could ever describe. Heck, even Will and Techno couldn't find words when I took them flying a few times. ‘M sorry I could take you mate.” He looked back at you with an expression you could only describe as longing and guilt.
You pursed your lips looking at the floor until you felt something in you harden with a resolution you'd never had before. You stood catching Phil off guard and then more so when you took his hand into yours. “I’ll find a way to help you fly again Phil.”
He gawked for a minute, trying to express something with his free hand. “Hey now, just-” “No! You and everyone else here have given me so much. There are things I could research and use to reverse engineering something, like the Riptide enchantment. There have to have been more people like you before, I'm sure I could try to find something about them and how they fixed their wings.” You said firmly before Phil seemed to harden as well. “Now listen-” “No, Phil! Flying is a part of you just as much as walking or breathing. You need to fly so I'm going to help you. It's not like I have much to do at night anyway aside from clearing mobs and doing what you all ask me to do on occasion. You can't stop me either!”
“You’d waste your life on a wide hunt that leads you nowhere for someone you just met?!” He yelled back, standing and towering over you as his wings instinctively spread to appear more threatening. “I’d work myself dead before I let my friend be hurt for the rest of his life and be nothing but depressed about it forever!”
You glared at each other for a good while. Eventually, Phil sighed, lowering his head so his bucket hate obscured his eyes from your view. “You won't find anything.” He said, sounding hollow, defeated. “Better than sitting around just like I did in that cave.” He looked up at you with an emotion you couldn't place before you continued. “You all were my first friends. I'm not going to just sit by and watch more people get hurt. Especially when they're close to me now.” He furrowed his brows before pursing his lips and sighing, smiling tiredly as he patted your bushy hair.
“Don't work yourself to death.” You chuckled. “I only promise to try.” You both shared a laugh as you both finished your tea and cleaned up. You were halfway out the door when you looked back at Phil who was looking at you like he was thinking of something else. “You’ll fly again, old man.” He smiled, which you smirked back at. “It'll happen or I'm not a glare.” He laughed as you exited, looking down before climbing up the ladder to his bed.
He sat on it, thinking once more. So determined you were. Just like them. Just like he was. He could only hope you wouldn't end up the same way for your ideals too.
