       what just happened? 

    alberto had picked up the weird shiny rock on the beach because it had looked pretty, and he liked collecting things, it was part of what he did! he’d intended to take it up to his tower and store it with the other rocks he’d collected over time, but before he’d reached the tower, the rock had started to glow and float into the air. before he knew it, some.. woman was stood there, and alberto ducked behind a large boulder, peeking over it slowly. 

     “uh --- you’re my new.. what?”

            “  New  pearl  ?  ”  The  confusion  in  Dib’s  tone  is  clear  as  he  stares  up  at  the  gem.  “  What  are  you  talking  about  ?  ”

“You mean Steven? He’s at the Big Donut getting a snack.”

“Are you okay? You don’t sound like yourself.”

Nothing about this felt right. And no, not the sandwich being in a shape meant more for sweet and creamy ice cream treats; he could easily live with with that little deviation from the norm. The one involving Pearl...not so much.

“You...really don’t remember any of it, do you?” he frowned, gazing up at her. “Y-You’re not just another Pearl. I know you; I’ve known you my whole life. I could tell you apart from any Gem, no matter how much they might look like you.”

Steven stood straight and determined. Pearl was family--he was not giving up on her. “I know your memories are still somewhere deep down in there. We just need to figure out how to dig them back out,” he declared. “If I could get Centipeetle to remember me after she forgot, I can do the same for you!”

Upon his proclamation, he picked a cookie off the plate and munched on it. ...What? He was hungry.

steven’s worry was evident as he stared up at pearl, alike to his pearl in every single way.. except.. he swallowed thickly, his chest feeling tight. seeing her like this felt wrong, it just wasn’t right, and he reached up, taking her hand gently, dark eyes looking up at her with tears beginning to brim.

“   please.. you.. you need to remember.. you need to try..   ”

A twinge of pity beat in her chest at the sight of this Pearl, devoid of a master or purpose. What was the point of stealing away her memories, if she was left without a role to serve? 

“Did White not assign you a new master…?”

“Pearl, knock it off,” Bismuth said. She didn’t necessarily mean to be so short with her friend, but she wasn’t at all a fan of what had been done to her. The best way she could think of to counteract it was to try and end those servant tendencies as quick as she could.

“First of all, you know I’m still workin’ on this one,” Bismuth said, bringing down her hammer on the still hot metal she was crafting into a sword. “Second, even if I wasn’t, you’re better than just holdin’ things for me.”

             “ look, that’s great, and all---- ”        and mildly creepy, but he kept that one to himself, for now.         “    but i really don’t need someone watching over me all the time, i do just fine on my own!    ” 

        pearl had already panicked when he’d tried jumping off of a cliff ------ one of his favourite ways to leave the island, mind you ------ and had stopped him before he’d hit the water. he’d be impressed by her strength if it hadn’t had been so inconvenient. jeez, how was he supposed to be reckless and have fun if she was breathing down his neck all of the time? 

           “    i already told you --- i don’t need a.. pearl, or whatever it is you say you are. i’m just trying to have fun and collect human stuff.    ”
