Ziva and Mcgee / number 14

14) “Hey, I’m with you, okay? Always.”

Ziva rested one hand on the edge of the bathroom sink and the other on her stomach. She felt like she was going to be sick. This was too much, too soon.

“Ziva? I’m back. Where are you?”

She blinked a few times and gave herself a shake, trying to dislodge her anxiety. It would be okay. He’d understand.

She opened the bathroom door and walked down the hallway until she reached the living room, catching sight of Tim in the kitchen, opening the containers of takeout he’d gone out to retrieve. He glanced up when she approached the counter and sat on one of the stools there.

“So I got sweet & sour, sesame and orange chicken because I wasn’t sure what you were. . .” He trailed off as he took in her failed attempt at looking casual. “You okay?”

Ziva blinked, having been so lost in her thoughts she’d forgotten he was even talking. “What? Oh, yes, I’m fine.”

Tim frowned. “I don’t think you are,” he said, and continued before she could insist she was. “And don’t tell me you’re not. I think I know you well enough by now.”

Ziva swallowed hard at his words, then looked up at him, worry pooling in her eyes. Tim’s face softened and he abandoned the food, walking around to join her on the other side of the counter. He sat on the stool next to her and took hold of one of her hands.

“Ziva?”

“I’m pregnant.”

As soon as the words left her mouth, Ziva wished she could take them back. She hadn’t meant to come out with it like that, but then again, blunt seemed to be her style in just about everything else, why not in telling your (very new) boyfriend you’re having his child?

“What?”

Ziva was reminded that she had in fact said that aloud at Tim’s question, and she looked up to find an expression of shock on his face.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered, and was horrified to feel tears building in her eyes. She hadn’t wanted to cry.

“Sorry?” Tim sounded confused. “Ziva, this isn’t your fault. We did this together.” She nodded, but didn’t look up at him. He placed a finger under her chin and tipped her head up so she would. “Hey, I’m with you, okay? Always.”

Ziva managed to smile at that. “I know.”

“It’s stupid. Stupid, stupid, stupid. Ziva is so… And I’m so…”

Ziva halted on her way to her desk, sure she was overhearing something she wasn’t supposed to be. She and McGee were working late tonight and she’d gone off to the break room to get herself a chocolate bar (and McGee some Nutter Butters - he hadn’t asked for anything, but she figured he’d appreciate the sentiment). And now…

Now she was hiding behind a partition, listening to McGee talk to himself. About her. 

She was most certainly going to hell.

“I don’t know why I agreed to work late tonight,” McGee continued, oblivious of Ziva’s presence. “I just did it because Ziva was and I wanted to spend some time with her that didn’t include Tony. Like maybe if he wasn’t around, then maybe…” He shook his head. “What am I saying? She’s gorgeous and I am very much not her type.”

Ziva decided she’d heard enough. “I think I know better than you what my type is, McGee.”

His head popped up in alarm and his cheeks turned a deep shade of red. “Ziva! I, uh, I didn’t know you were standing there.”

“I figured as much,” she said, and tempered her words with a soft smile. She walked to his desk and balanced herself on a corner. “You do not think very highly of yourself, McGee.”

He rolled his eyes and sat back in his chair. “Yeah, well, I’m just being realistic.” Ziva raised an eyebrow at him and he shrugged. “Look at yourself, Ziva.”

She glanced down, then looked back to him. “Alright. What now?”

He laughed. “No, I meant, you’re…” He trailed off, feeling embarrassed again.

Ziva’s eyes narrowed in remembrance. “I believe the word you used was gorgeous.” McGee blushed again and she laughed. “It is fine, McGee. I am flattered that you think so.”

He sighed. “But not interested.”

Now it was Ziva’s turn to shrug. “I never said that.”

McGee attempted to keep the grin from his face, but mostly failed. “You… are interested?”

Ziva leaned forward enough to plant a soft peck on his lips, leaving him looking as dazed as if they’d shared a long, passionate kiss, then stood up. “Maybe,” she said, and walked back to her desk.

McGee couldn’t stop smiling the rest of the night.
