It had been not even a year since the Overwatch recall, but somehow the old headquarters on Gibraltar were buzzing with life like not in a long time. About 2 months back Mccree had joined them as well, with a new face following him, quite loyaly. It was a beautiful woman by the name Ronja. She was a very capable support Hero and a great addition to their missions. Genji remembered that back when he talked to Hitomi about her, telling her about her appereance and how Ronja was during missions, she would listen carefully and nod in affirmation. It had been a long walk for Hitomi to adjust to the life at Overwatch. She had been through quite a lot in just the first few months of Genji getting her to the base, but she was managing. Quite peculiar to Genji was how she approuched Ronja with such warmth and kindness, while showing others her rather cold and stern facade, serious and strict, to maintain order in the Headquarters. She did that to everyone but two people. Hanzo, because of her traumatic memories from decades ago, and Ronja.
Today too was no different. Finished with another workout session, Genji exited the gym together with Mccree, when the sound of soft laughter made both of them stop. Hitomi and Ronja stood together, Hitomi as usual with her clipboard in her arms, and Ronja with seemingly comfortable lounging around clothes. It was unclear what they were laughing about. but it was a wonderful sight. Genji felt his cheeks heat up under his face plate just staring at Hitomis head slightly tilted forward, hand trying to cover her mouth slightly to not laugh too loud. He hadn’t seen her so happy in... actually, he hadn’t seen her laughing like this since the time back in Shimada Castle. A shift in position, had his attention shift to Jessee, who was trying to cover his big grin with his hand, almost laughing himself. Ah, right. Jesse and Ronja were a couple, that had almost slipped his mind.
“She has a very beautiful laugh.” Genji said, more out of politeness and courtesy, than anything else. Maybe in his teen years he might’ve been interested in her, but not now that he was grown up and-... a changed man. Jesse sighed almost pleased.
“Yeah, she’s gorgeous, aint she? But yer girl isn’t so bad either.”
“My girl-?”
He was quite glad that Jesse couldn’t see his cheeks darken with emberassement. Despite his feelings for Hitomi, it was still a partially strained relationship between them. He didn’t blame her. With everything the Shimada had done to her, it was no wonder she behaved as she did towards both him and his brother. But he would be lying if he said he didn’t wish for that laugh and smile to be more around him.
“Ooooh~? I seee, heartbreaker Genji Shimada didn’t make the move yet huh?”
Sometimes Genji seriously cursed how good Jesse knew him.
“Heartbreaker? Since when?” He shrugged. “Maybe I was just too stealthy when making my move.”
Mccree burst out in laughter at that, even Genjis lips curling up into a soft smile. It was that burst of loud laughter that had the girls suddenly look up, Hitomi not exactly looking anywhere while Ronja seemed to beam with excitement, running at Jesse and jumping at him. The cowboy caught her without much effort and twirled her around before setting her down, arms still around her waist.
“Missed me, sweetpea?” A soft gigle escaped the darkskinned woman, as she seemed to have completely forgotten everything and everyone around her. The only thing that mattered now was Jesse. The sight was just adorable. And Genji was happy to see Mccree so joyful and in love.
But his attention shifted to where Ronja had run over from, eyes laying on Hitomi that was seemingly standing there left alone. Her smile had vanished and her hands were now clutching around the clipboard as if looking for support from it. She seemed lost.
Genji gave Jesse a short glance, but the cowboy just nodded in affirmation. With a swift almost unhumanly fast movement he had closed the distance to Hitomi, unsure if to touch her or not.
“... Genji-sama?” She knew?
“Ah- yes. I didn’t want to have you stand here so alone.”
Her eyes were so beautiful, but with them unfocused on anything and just staring into nothing her blindness became evident again. She seemed sad.
“Thank you very much, Genji-sama, but I am fine.” She said with a slight bow and tried to take a deep breath as unnoticcible as possible. But of course Genji would notice. It hurt seeing how much she pushed herself. What was it that Ronja had that he didn’t?
But maybe his advances really were too stealthy.
Hitomi turned away to walk back into the Base, when suddenly Genji made a step forward.
“Hitomi-chan- well, would you maybe, mind drinking a cup of tea with me?” She stopped in her tracks turning back towards his voice, seemingly surprised.
“Right now?”
“Well, unless you are busy, of course.”
She took a moment to think about it, but eventually her lips curled into something akin to a smile.
McRonja Siren!AU - in which Siren Ronja falls in love with Lifesaver Jesse and grows legs to be with him (dw, no contract with a sea witch involved ;D this was sheer willpower and a touch of siren magic)

She has been outcast by other sirens since she refuses to attack and eat humans and all that usual siren stuff (she got scars all over from other sirens who attacked her) so she lives very near by the shore and is very very lonely. blah blah she slowly befriends Jesse (which is a bit difficult at the beginning bc language barrier) and falls in love but is always sad when he leaves so 1 day she just decides she will grow legs bc sirens can technically do that if necessary tho its very difficult and painful. so next day Jesse visits her she sits there with legs n hes like YO WTF HOW?! ;; so she may have legs but she cant really walk bc well she didnt learn it and her legs dont really have that much strength yet. uhhh he figures he just takes her with him and help her 4 now??
