tbh I’m really emotional about the krogan so far in Andromeda. Just... we’re finally being shown a side of them that’s different than the hurr durr big bad mercenary attack dog. We got hints of it in the second game, when you get to go to Tunchanka with Grunt and learn a bit more about their culture, and then a little more in the third when you have Bakara with you, but this fucking game oh my gosh
Out of every single Milky Way colony -- every goddamn one -- the krogan colony is, at this point, really the only one thriving. Even Kadara Port is a dog-eat-dog world, it’s basically Andromeda’s Omega at this point. And the frustrating thing is that Kadara is, arguably, much more livable than Elaaden -- heck, it was already an Angaran settlement, whereas the Angaran had considered Elaaden uninhabitable! Even with undrinkable water, they still had filtration methods there, it should have been so much easier for people, exiles or no, to integrate with that society and start to really thrive. Except the exiles stomped in and big, aggressive boots and turned it into a fucking mess.
The krogans on the other hand? The oh-so-scary, can’t-trust-em-as-far-as-you-can-throw-them krogan? They set up a settlement on a barren wasteland -- a really well-built one two, one that goes right into the rock itself to help deal with the heat -- figure out how to secure water, and for all intents and purposes seem to have a system set up for everyone to share resources as necessary. (Sure, they’ve got Some Shit going down with leadership but all in all... New Tuchanka is functional.)
More than functional, actually, the krogan seem to have something that even the my colonists on Eos don’t have much of: leisure time. That is how well set up they are.
And what does half of their terminal chatter talk about? PSAs on how to work together, and how to get use to living together with the males and females, how to coexist happily. I’m on a mission right now from their shaman to help a couple of krogan settle their differences in a peaceful (for krogan, it still involves fighting large animals) manner. They have botanists. They have research.
It’s such frustrating, delicious irony. They were kicked off the Nexus because they wanted more say in how things were run and it was basically decided that krogan are only grunt work and shouldn’t be allowed to have say in policies, that they can’t be trusted with that sort of thing. So what do they do as soon as they’re off the Nexus? Run shit way fucking better than the Nexus ever managed untill the Pathfinder came to hold their hands.
AND THEY ARE ACTIVELY REACHING OUT TO CONTACT THE NEXUS AGAIN. Racists fuckers on the goddamn nexus can’t get their heads out of their asses, but at least the a large number of the krogan seem to realize that holding a grudge in this case is stupid and it would be better to work together, as equals.
Besides that, which is already enough to make my heart swell, how about my favourite krogan: Kesh
because she is fucking amazing
Out of all the leadership on the Nexus -- Tann, Addison, Kandros, etc -- she is the most reasonable, most compassionate, and most connected with her people. She is constantly working for the best of her people, of the station, and even of the krogan now that they’re off the station. She’s a granddaughter, she knocks back hard liquor like it’s apple juice, she has a sweetheart who sends her flowers, and she’s resiliently holds her own even though she’s basically the only krogan left on the Nexus. She is such a wonderful character, and just cheerfully flips krogan stereotypes on their head.
So yeah, this was just basically my love letter to say that I love krogan and I love them even more now after playing andromeda and I’m so happy that they basically got the metaphoric chance to spit the faces of the neysayers and make something amazing.
