Week 13 I was on leave and into Week 14 - straight back into things and it was good to see a couple of new projects had happened whilst I was off - we now have a few new upcycled pallet planters and the stone circle has been installed in the Sensory Garden (see next post). Since then we’ve been clearing a shrub bed with a view to re-homing them and creating a new major access route between the gardens and the tool cabins. We were donated a lot of Delphinium seedlings which we’ve potted up and I was grateful to the grounds team at Newcastle University for allowing me to take cuttings from their campus beds. They have provided lots of interesting new stock for us which we will be selling in our garden centre next spring, Our polyanthus order has arrived so these have been pricked out and should be ready for sale in a few weeks time. We’ve been experimenting with some new vertical growing products as part of our ongoing research and development with Ultraponix. Shaun has installed new window vents in the newly skinned polytunnel (the grapes seem al the happier for it!) as well as repairing the doors which were vandalised back in early June. Our orchard is full of ripe pears and apples and the long polytunnel is bursting with tomatoes, cucumbers, pumpkins and leeks which are all for sale of course. And finally we kind of have a pond - just kidding, but last night’s torrential thunderstorms made a good effort of part filling it!
Week 12: We’ve been pressing on with clearing out the old potting shed for conversion into the new garden centre shop. It’s been suffering with water leaks and visits from rats (all now fixed or gone, I should add). We are hoping to raise some funds to help remodel it inside since the building itself is pretty sound. We need paint, new floorboards and fixtures and fittings - please reach out to us if you can help in any way. After our workshop with Roweena Russell on Wednesday, we’ve been inspired to upcycle as many pallets as we can get for free into the new shop design.
The Evening Chronicle came down to take our photos for an article they will run next Friday 9th September. This is to acknowledge the 25th anniversary of the Meadow Well riots, but hopefully also to stress just how far the area has come since then and all the ways it has improved. Meadow Well Connected is a big part of this improvement and the services we offer the local residents are valued and important.
We thought our Polish chicken Afro, was a hen.. Not so sure these days...
It's a sweltering day here in the Meadow Well Connected community garden. Just right for the sunflowers to bloom. #sunflower #meadowwellconnected #communitygarden #whatsinbloom #augustflowers (at Meadow Well)
Our final group of NCS volunteers this week and a great finish to a very productive few days here, overall. We seem to have endless raised beds here to weed but it’s good to know that another ten or more are now in a much better condition, thanks to their efforts.
