Interesting new meat alternative: 肉肉しいがんも or Nikunikushii Ganmo, made with Sagamiya's The Innocent Meat. Ganmo refers to a fritter of tofu and chopped root vegetables, which is commonly boiled up in oden. I don't know that I've ever seen it fried! More than anything, though, this reminded me of a tofu hamburg (which is often a mixture of tofu and ground chicken) or a fist-sized meatball.
But this was different from a lot of Japanese fake meat for a few reasons. First, it's 100% plant based—not something you can rely on with "vegetarian" food here! Second, it doesn't have a weird chemical sweetness (like this or this or this). For me, it's a win on those two factors alone.
And it also tastes nice! Pretty juicy, if not especially meaty or savory. I pan-fried each side for 2~3 min (per the directions) and topped it with leftover tomato sauce. Next time, I might crumble it up and see if it works in place of ground meat.
Vegans just don't want to eat animals... simple as that.
