Terry (also known as Xipe Totec if you're boring) is part of a species of interstellar beings. Each individual of this species is a sort of parasitic megacolony that has taken over a planet as its own skeleton. The read meaty color you see is their pigment, something like chlorophyll in plants, but iron-based. They use it to absorb energy directly from stars. Since they need a lot of iron to keep their metabolism going, they roam around, altering their orbit to collide (this is how they eat) with asteroids and get that tasty iron from them.
