eulogy meme

   the suit chafes like it never has before. pinches under his arms and feels too tight. boxing him in like solid walls, like claustrophobia. it’s all in his head– he knows that. the suit was tailored to him ages ago.

{ stark took him to an elderly italian man with a small shop downtown & he’d taken his precise measurements, all business and heavy accent with his bushy silver eyebrows. the way tony had leaned against the wall with a casual smile while steve got measured every way he could think of and a few he’d never considered before. }

the suit fits perfectly though— it ALWAYS has. 

     until now. but if anything--- tony’s death diminishes him. 

( but of course the world is less full without tony in it. that sounds right, as though the world should be as devastated as steve feels. )

steve is no stranger to death. from his father, to his mother, to bucky , to his world & the familiar. those around him caught death from like an infectious disease and though steve didn’t die himself-- he was a carrier of it. to be close to him was to hold hands with your own mortality.

                              strange-- he should be used to this by now. 

he’s not.

             he won’t ever be.

steve can stand behind another podium, in another uncomfortable suit, he can say the prettiest most heartfelt words he can think of, he can hold back his tears until he’s in private so people don’t see how hard it is to carry on. he can do all those things. 

           ---but it won’t stop him from having to do them again. dominos falling with the people around him, tony said once there was no retirement plan when you were an avenger. 

“ in our line of work-- well, i’ve had to do this a lot, more than i like to remember. and it’s always hard. death lingers with you when somebody you love dies, the more you love them, the longer you feel the loss. and you know, as many times as i’ve stood here and spoken about remembering somebody and celebrating their life....

                      -- it has NEVER been as difficult as it is right now. “

that’s the truest thing he could say and he meets carol’s eyes in the front row, red rimmed in a way makeup & superpowers can’t hide and nods at him & he breathes shakily into the microphone.

“ tony stark has been a lot of things to a lot of people. an inventor, a ceo, a superhero, an innovator, an avenger. but i think of him simply as my friend-- my best friend. he gave me & the avengers so many things, a home, a leader & ally, family. and if he were here he’d make it all sound like no big deal, because that’s just how tony was. it wasn’t how much he gave to me, it was what he gave to me.  but the simplest & most lasting of those was HOPE.

     when i first got here, fresh from the ice and sort of ridiculously perplexed about the world around me-- i wasn’t sure i could ever live here. REALLY live here. not just be alive but-- have a place in this world, a purpose, family, friends. there were times when i wanted to give up. -- there were a lot of times it would have been easier. ”

it was good, that of all the things he had gotten from his mother, he had her courage. not the sort of courage it took to charge unto the battlefield or fight & sacrifice. but the courage to go on. 

   “ i remember one night-- on a particularly bad night, actually-- i asked ‘when does this get easier?’. and he looked at me & he said never. that it would never get easier. now, you’re probably wondering why i’m telling this story but it gets better, i promise. then he said it wouldn’t get easier because it was just the type of person i was, he said I was EXOTHERMIC. “

he laughs hoarsely the sound catching in his throat, rattling around. 

  “ -- i KNOW , right? it was about the most tony stark thing to say but he explained. he said-- i was one of those people who radiate everything they are. the elements that make me up, i give them away to those around me. hope & courage & empathy, i don’t horde them away. && the truth is that it’s never easy to be that kind of person, because you don’t keep anything for yourself. but just because it’s hard-- it doesn’t mean it’s not worth it. every moment has been worth it.

               but--- i think that was tony’s way of calling me a star. maybe it was a hero thing, or maybe it was a joke because of my uniform. but it’s stayed with me all this time & now--- now that he’s gone, i can’t stop thinking about that. 

i get it now though, because if i was a star than tony is-- tony was a supernova. very bright but very brief. once in a lifetime, blink- and- you -miss- it kind of celestial event. & to tell you the truth, i think i’m always going to see the flare of it when i close my eyes. 

            -- but to be honest, i wouldn’t change that for anything in the world. “

cracks knuckles, okay lets get down to business, i am going to talk about a fellow aussie of mine that i have known for quite some time. about five years, give or take a year. mechaniism has always been the other half of my otps/brotps. when i first met claudia, i honestly had no idea that pressing that follow button would lead me here. not just an rp partner but a dear friend. her writing was impeccable, I was no where near her standard when i first followed her, & here we are. her writing is just as phenomenal. her ability to take on a muse and really understand the character on such a deep level has not left her after all these years. an extremely hilarious, down to earth person, that has the talent of killing those around her with her muses feels. she stands up for what she believes in & is a wonderful person to be friends with. i feel like i just made a toast at your 21st birthday or wedding where i am letting you go off with your partner. anways, claussie you are a ray of sunshine and thank you for being you.

who steals french fries off the other’s plate: it has gotten to the point where both of them buy extra so the other person could steal it.

who jokingly moves in for the kiss when someone asks if they’re a couple: tony does. 

who has to bust or bail the other out of jail: they both have each others back.

who gives the other advice/comfort about dating issues: sam helps tony out with pep - tony just goes along with it for the sake of sam feeling like he’s helping. tony has a few advice for sam on what not to do.

who shamelessly cheats at games by reaching over to cover the other’s eyes: sam. he hates to loose games.

who immediately calls dibs on the top bunk: sam does. but tony always manages to snoop it before he could.

who starts and who wins the pillow fights: tony starts. tony wins.

who says “your pants would look better on their floor” to the other’s potential crush: tony. every single time.
