Okay.. Time out. Medical story time.
A study was published by 3 male doctors, to help prevent unprofessional behavior online in young vascular surgeons and students. It was done by finding social media profiles of the young surgeons and students and seeing what was posted. There were two ‘problem’ categories
1) Clearly unprofessional behavior as seen by post with:
HIPPA violations, meaning disclosing patient information, intoxicated appearance, unlawful behavior, possession of drugs or drug paraphernalia and uncensored profanity or offensive comments about colleagues/ work/ patients.
Very unprofessional and very relevant. It could have been a guideline to young people hoping to go into any area really that these things will disuade patients from trusting you. Don’t do them!
2) Potentially unprofessional pieces of content
Holding/consuming alcohol, inappropriate attire, censored profanity, controversial political or religious comments, controversial social topics
This is bullshit. It’s subjective and HEAVILY biased. it is so full of subjective, cognitive and even gender bias, it has even been called sexist and they are not wrong.
Doctors are humans, how is it fair to say that women aren’t allowed to post a photo of a family vacation where they are wearing bikinis or having a glass of wine / beer with friends, I mean.. why are we upholding and perpetuating this elitist idea we have that doctors have to be held to higher standards. I mean if you look it up online there are instances of women in bikinis saving surfers or beach goers from terrible accidents and guess what their bikini did fuck-all to hinder their ability to save this persons life!
If they are off duty they should not be expected to be ready to go see patients, they are humans and honestly isn’t it easier to relate to a doctor you know is human, you know has a life and has similar experiences to you, instead of this posh dickhead that spends every free moment he can, avoiding his family while playing golf before going to his yacht and sipping champagne, that he’s not allowed to post anyways cause god forbid he be seen with an alcoholic drink within a radius of 5 miles.. I mean what is going on!!
Not to mention the controversial topics thing. These topics are the ones where we need medical professionals!
To talk about vaccines, abortions, gun violence, the obesity problems, this whole corona mess, political misinformation and so much more. This is where we need them. We can’t start excluding doctors from taking part in society because they must be “professional”.. this is ridiculous. We need a purge of all this old stuffy ideals and we need to adapt our world view to the world that we are currently living in cause it’s not gonna change backwards that much is for sure.
