Six Core Principles for Optimal Health
a. Drink plenty of water-
Drinking water is essential for all living things and for the well-being and survival of the human body. We are not built to sustain long periods without water, as our body consists of two-thirds of this fluid. Humans can survive without food for weeks but may only live for a few days without water. It is recommended that we drink 4 to 8 glasses of water daily, but many people do not, and drinking caffeinated beverages may only further dehydrate the body. Water can make your complexion clear and make your skin look as if it’s glowing. It flushes excess fat from your bloodstream because water is a solvent and creates a healthy digestion by preventing constipation and hard to pass stools. One more thing that I learned from the textbook was that staying hydrated before exercising can prevent activity-induced asthma attacks by proper hydration to the airways.
b. Whole food diet-
When we think “healthy diet”, I doubt anyone’s first thought is a can of ravioli or a frozen dinner. We think of the foods provided to us from the earth, right? There’s a reason for that. Our bodies accept these foods readily and can process them because they are not foreign substances created in a lab artificially. Whole foods such as legumes, whole grain foods, and fresh produce are packed full of nutrients and vitamins that our bodies need to keep a healthy body and give us energy to fight off illness and stress. Packaged, preserved, canned, and frozen foods are stripped of enzymes, vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and other nutritional substances that you could easily acquire by eating whole foods. Just by eating healthy portions of fruits and vegetables daily you are potentially saving yourself from heart disease or diabetes, and by eating grains like oats, quinoa, and corn you are getting your daily fiber that will help with digestion and other nutrients needed.
c. Exercise-
Exercising is beneficial to your mood, your energy, and your sleep- and that’s only the beginning. When you add more movement to your life you are improving your circulation and endurance for other activities outside of exercise. If you are using more energy than you are bringing in, you are promoting weight loss. Exercise can help prevent arthritis, pain in your back and injuries, heart disease, osteoporosis, stroke, and type 2 diabetes. Exercise helps decrease blood pressure, body fat, cholesterol, and the potential for cancer. The more you exercise the better your balance becomes, as well as improving your immune system.
d. Healthy weight-
Maintaining a healthy weight will reduce your chances of becoming obese and getting heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and stroke.
e. Natural healing remedies-
There are millions of people in the U.S. who are prescribed a medication that they shouldn’t be taking. There are alternative medications with far less harmful side effects that can prevent or treat illness that go unused due to doctors being uninformed or misled on the benefits. Taking care of your body with nutrition, exercise, and avoiding prescription drugs can provide a balance for optimal health.
f. Vitamin & mineral plan-
There’s not a person on this planet who dreams of being sick all the time, whether it’s physical or mental illness we’re discussing. Our bodies are like machines and when they are well-oiled, they run efficiently. Having the appropriate daily intake of vitamin and minerals give our bodies the tools they need to run properly. I like the way it’s worded in the textbook, “…vitamins and minerals are health insurance.” There are many different elements that attack our bodies from environmental pollutants to superbugs that are invading our systems. Ensuring we get enough vitamins and minerals are basically armoring up our immune systems to fight these invasions that tax our bodies.
