Update: On 11 July 2025, the Supreme Court of Galicia ruled in favour of the As Conchas campaigners - that pollution from industrial livestock farms violates the fundamental right to living in a healthy environment for tens of thousands of residents in the Spanish region of Galicia. The court ordered the regional authorities to enforce environmental controls and clean up the water systems, after they failed for decades to reign in excrement discharges from the megafarms that have seriously contaminated the local reservoir, river and groundwater.
The landmark decision that cites the Spanish Constitution and European human rights law could set a precedent for other campaigns against industrial agriculture pollution in other part of Europe.
