There are two types of magic: hamingja and megin.

Hamingja is the magic you are born with, a finite amount bestowed upon you at birth by the Norns. Everyone is gifted different amounts. Some people run through theirs in just a few years while others have it last their whole lifetime. Theres no way to know how much you were born with or how much you have left. But once you become aware of it and learn to control its use then you can more mindfully go through your stores. Once it's gone, it's gone for good.

Megin, on the other hand, is earned magic. It almost mimics reputation and is gained by being true to your word, upholding oathes taken, and doing favors for spirits/gods/wights/etc. If you wish to work with spirits and wights, then building up megin is very important as you need more megin in order to work with more powerful wights. Megin, from my own understanding, is basically the equivalent of reputation in the spirit realm. The more you can prove yourself reliable the more likely these spirit entities will be willing to work with you.

For the shaman it is suggested that you must deplete your hamingja stores and rely on building megin and community. It's thought that to truly merge with the spirits, the shaman must be "hollow". This is especially true in rehard to seiðr work.

Okay, meet Gos (short for Sarasragos or Sragos). He was one of my most drawn characters from 2014-2016. He was part of a story that I stopped liking, except for him and his lore and his witch friend Madame Ves.

His deal was that he’s supposed to be this ancient greek wizard who messed up some experiment and ended up dragged into in one hellish stone desert world called Erem, a world with no color, and full of eldritch nonspeaking demons. (some images: 1 , 2 , 3 , 4) He managed to find a door back home, 70 years later, but at that point living there for so long has changed and replaced his entire body, leaving him as this shapeshifting mass. Every now and then he’s banished from his home world by mages and then again needs a long time to find his way back. He checks himself in mirrors a lot, because his greatest fear is forgetting how he used to look, back then when he was human, and how to shapeshift himself into something that resembles that accurately. His sense of taste is now kinda alien too, so he will drink whole gallons of apple vinegar at once or crave the weidest stuff from raw potatoes to candles, curtains or coins. Pretty much everything except for salt.
