"So Far Away"
The post in which Sarah Murphy reports from Boston (and learns how to Tumble)
RAB's native Bostonian got to travel back to her hometown to catch Meg Mitchell Moore's reading and book launch party for SO FAR AWAY in Newburyport, MA! Moore entertained a large crowd at Jabberwocky Bookshop:
"A few people told me they'd read my book after they read FIFTY SHADES OF GREY, so I thought I'd just read from that tonight."
Jabberwocky is an impressive indie, btw. It's a large store with a friendly, helpful staff and a prominently displayed copy of WHY PAINT CATS.
The after-party was an impressive affair. As a nod to the Irish immigrant storyline in SO FAR AWAY, and to celebrate Moore's Irish heritage, her daughters and their friends danced traditional Irish dances to live Irish music. Color this Murphy impressed.
I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the gorgeous (and delicious!) cake. I don't think Newburyport's ever seen a book party like this. Talk about a good night out.
Publishers Weekly had this to say about SO FAR AWAY:
"This sweet and thoughtful novel is both tense and elegiac, exploring the damage we inflict on ourselves and each other, and the strength it takes to heal."
And Moore compared it to her first novel, THE ARRIVALS (out now in paperback!):
"THE ARRIVALS is about people who turn to their family for solace when things go wrong. SO FAR AWAY is about people who don't have that source of solace. That's the difference to me."
Well said, Meg. Heads up for those of you looking for summer reads: you will devour these books. Just like I devoured the cake.

“Moore wields a powerfully emotive style, not unlike Francine Prose, in which she displays both deep compassion and winning humor…a beautifully told story of human fallibility and connection."
