If it were up to you, how would you bring Steve Trevor back for the sequel?
You know, in terms of actual, plausible things that might conceivably be done in the movies ... I can’t think of a way. There are really only two even remotely movie-plausible options: Steve turns out to have survived the explosion somehow and/or gets literally deus ex machina’d back (I mean, with actual gods around, it’s not too much of a stretch), but since I feel that the sequel should be set in some other time period than WWI, he’d be extremely aged and/or dead of natural causes by the time the sequel happens; or the same actor plays a new character, either a descendant of someone in Steve’s family or a dead ringer for him, a la Sharon Carter in Marvel, and I’d prefer that the movies didn’t retread the first movie’s romance if they’re not going to have the same actual character. (Although, that being said, there is a devil’s-advocate part of me that almost kinda hopes they do it because I want to find out if there would be the same explosion of character hate and “ewww, it’s incest!” if the replacement character is a fan-favorite pretty blue-eyed white boy ...)
However! Talking about deus ex machina, and with the caveat that I actually prefer Diana not to be paired up permanently for awhile, much in the same way that I like Steve/Peggy in the first CA movie but I also prefer it as a tragic doomed romance to one that worked out well for both parties ...
The Greek gods are real in the DC movie universe, right? Which means Hades, Charon, the River Styx, etc. are probably ALSO real, in some sense? My ideal way of bringing Steve back would be to have Diana go on an epic quest for him in the Greek afterlife, maybe fight some gods, etc, and eventually drag his ass back to reality with her. Ideally (since I don’t think coming back from the dead should be easy) it would end up in a sort of reverse Persephone situation, where he can be with her part of the year but has to spend the rest of the year in the Greek underworld performing some kind of useful task for Hades. He could also end up functionally immortal that way, or at least long lived.
