The Gate of Maternal Virtues. Built in 1939 to commerate the 1 year anniversary of New Chinatown in an area formerly called Sonoratown (it was home to immigrants from Northern Mexico and early European settlers) and Little Italy. This was at one point 1 of 3 Chinatowns in Los Angeles. There was Old Chinatown (the current site of Union Station) and nearby China City. Angelenos know that our actual Chinatown is now in the San Gabriel Valley. To me, this area is touristy and very Instagram friendly (hello #meimeilou). Yesterday, I discovered an underground store to buy fireworks. I always find amusement walking by all the strange people who would fall in line for half a day just for fried chicken. It still confuses me whenever I walk by that long line. 🤦🏻♀️ (at Chinatown Central Plaza) https://www.instagram.com/p/BvYEHWilscS/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1iag5cy41txj5
