Do you find it strange that many obvious AU ideas don't get explored in fanfic? For example, in soul eater there is a large focus on the charachters and their relationships, so you think just swaping who teams up with who and what would happen would make for an interesting plot, even if it be worse. Imagine Maka dealing with the Thompson sisters, Kid being serious while at the same time caught between wanting to weild a scythe but also symetry, Tsubaki stuck in Cronas back, Ragnarok and Blkstar.

I have toyed with a fanfic about characters swapping personalities, but not as an AU and not changing weapon partnerships drastically.

I am sure I've seen fan art that swaps the team-ups.

I think, to Ohkubo's credit, he crafted pretty clear characterizations for each character so that it's hard for me to imagine different dynamics in meister-weapon partnerships for the main characters. I don't mean that it's hard to imagine different dynamics for other relationships (platonic or otherwise) between the main characters. But it's hard for me to imagine any other meister for each weapon: Maka's stubborn seriousness with Soul's stubborn cool-guy demeanor, Black Star's obnoxiousness with Tsubaki's gentle insistence, Kid's cool demeanor but obsessiveness with Liz's roughness but fearfulness and Patty's rambunctious chaos.

Tsubaki stuck in Crona's back is darkly amusing, though.
